Hi guys,

I've literally searched endlessly on the different VW oil specs and which are compatible with which car.

I'm pretty sure I don't have a DFP (thank god!) as I have an '06 reg and the exhaust pipes are pointing down so would I be right in saying that I can use any VW 505 01 spec oil?

My car is now on 173k miles and throughout its life it has used the VW 507 00 5w30 fully synthetic oil. I have found from my endless research that for PD engines without DFP's, like mine, it is better to use the VW 505 01 spec 5W40 oil rather than the low SAPs 507 00 oil which are specifically designed for DPF engines.

I have recently purchased a 4 litre bottle of Castrol Edge 5W40 Titanium (VW 505 01 spec) and I'm hoping is this the right oil for my car? I don't want anything to go wrong! thanks

If it's 505.01 then it will be fine. The long life 5w-30 oil your car has been using is a very good oil and used in almost all cars at VAG dealers these days petrol and diesel , DPF or not.
If it's managed 173K then the oil it was using wasn't doing too bad a job.

Karl.

Fine on the 505.01 however the 507.00 is the better oil with a higher synthetic basestock and overall additive package that out performs 505.01 for wear , sludge ,fuel economy etc.

I was in the parts dept yesterday asking about oil and they have told me that Audi have shifted on the specs also and that 0w30 is now 504 / 507 rated. He showed me a bottle of shell to prove it

Anymore info Lukey ?

Not surprised the previous LongLife to 504.00 / 507.00 was 506.01 and a 0w30.

I do appreciate that the 507 5w30 must be a very good oil, especially considering that my car has done 170k miles on it.
However according to many online forums, especially the American ones, they all recommend the 5w40 oil for the pd none DFP engine as it protects the engine better (cam shafts mostly) and burns less oil.

I don't think this is entirely true. From what I have read the difference between 507 and 505 01 spec is that the former has a lower SAPs rating to help prolong the life of the DPF. As a result it actually contains less additives than the 505 01. That said, the 507 is backwards compatible with 2.0 tdi engines without the DPF but whether it's as protective as fully synthetic 505 01 oil like the castrol edge 5w40 is something that needs to be looked into further

Different climate, different temperatures. Their summers tend to be hotter over there, so 5W-40 is better for them.

In the UK, for road use, stick to 5W-30, unless you're tracking the car all day, in which case you will benefit from 5W-40.

Seeing that I have already purchased the Castrol Edge 5w40 and we are approaching winter also the fact that I have used 5w30 long life through out the life of the car...I hope I would not be inflicting any damage on my engine using this 5w40 oil?

It's okay , 505.01 can really be thought as a minimum spec.

But isn't it ironic that an American oil company analysed both oils and found that the 504/507 outperformed the 505.01 .
