Originally I placed an order for an A1 through my work lease scheme but realised that the price I was paying was similar to that of an S3 direct through the dealer that received the A1 order. I spoke to the dealer and they took some of my details to do a finance check. I left them to it over the weekend and got an email from them saying that the finance had been approved. I then asked for details of the finance package and what the lead time would be, expecting a formal quote. The next email from the dealer said that they had placed the order and they sent the confirmation pdf showing price etc. quoting a November delivery.

Here's the thing - at the time drivethedeal weren't taking orders on the S3 so I just decided to go with the dealer as we had originally discussed a monthly payment on PCP that suited my budget. I've just got an email from drivethedeal saying they will take S3 orders now and the quote is about £4k cheaper than my current order. Given that I haven't actually signed any paperwork other than the finance check form what is my position in terms of negotiating a discount to match the drivethedeal quote? Can I cancel my order with no cost to myself and go with drivethedeal if their finance suits me?

I know the best thing to do is to speak to the dealer but any kind of experience of this kind of thing would be much appreciated.

I doubt it has gone anywhere near build dates yet and hopefully you haven't paid any deposit so you should really be able to cancel IMO.... Also if it in fact went as you said they have no written instruction or indeed consent for the order to be placed....??? Once you mention cancellation to them you may actually find that they become more open to negotiations....

No I haven't paid any deposit, though I did discuss the finance deal being no-customer-deposit with the dealer. It's only been 5 days since I got the order confirmation so nowhere near build. I just don't want to come across as messing them around, I hate it when people do that to me so try not to do it to others. Having said that I'm all for getting the best deal for me so won't be afraid to ask for what I want.

In that case you can deffo cancel anyways... 14 day rule applies I believe.

Also I would think less about messing people about and more that you are spending a hell of a lot of money so any chance to reduce that is a must!!!

You can't be seen as messing them around seeing as they placed the order of their own back... I'd be quite annoyed if they had done that on my behalf without telling me! Just say that you never asked them to order and you want to discuss finances further before committing to anything.

An update, I spoke to the dealer and he is going to come back to me tomorrow with something. Hopefully it will be something good.

Just another note. Even on a "no deposit" finance deal you may be asked to leave a deposit to secure the deal - which will then be credited on the day of picking up the car.

If you haven't signed any order paperwork then you can walk away mate.

As for messing about - it's your cash and they need to "sell" you a car. They're not doing you any favours - your a customer and it's their duty to make you happy if they want your custom.

Too many dealers (and customers) are falling into the trap of not having to do much work as people are grateful that they have been able to get finance in x car and have been given a discount and they're becoming complacent.
Just make them work and if it's no good for you walk away and go somewhere else. You'll be surprised how many can't be bothered with the chase. Then you'll come across a decent dealer and you'll be sorted.
I ended out giving up on all of the dealers in the North East (North East Audi group of dealers) and ended up dealing with Kings Lynn which is 3.5 hours away. But it's worth it for someone who actually wants my business and has been a pleasure to deal with.

So the dealer came back with an offer that was close to drivethedeal but still £1000 more over the life of the contract. I've requested they cancel the order they placed.

My only problem now is that I'm getting tempted to buy a 1-2yo TTRS instead.

Think that's fair. Hopefully drivethedeal can put you in touch with a dealer that's fairly local. The one they put me in touch with was 250 miles away and wouldn't accept trade in's! As far as I understand the finance quote is on the person and not the car / dealer so the dealership drivethedeal put you in touch with can retrieve your finance search. Certainly that's been my experience.

I'd go with the S3 - TTRS looking very old inside now. S3 I think is almost as quick.

That's good to hear, I had wondered about finance transfer. I agree, the interior of the S3 is much nicer, but the exterior of the TTRS is certainly a beautiful thing. Also, RS!

Yes but it's being superseded any time soon and you'll always feel it's old hat. Wait for the new one if you want a TTRS.

I don't think the new RS will be available for order until at least 2017
