Hi all , just been up to test drive somes cars and we asked about the 184 diesel in the saloon, but their is no release date yet

in light of the 184 info, we took out a 1.4 stronic, and a manual 2.0tdi. As they didn't have a stronic diesel diesel didn't drive as good as the petrol, might be the box.

but if we were considering the 1.4 cod is the 1500 quid worth it for the diesel.

anyone with cod, able to give real life stats, review? And vase versa with owners of 2.0 tdi stronic astronic a

thanks in advance

For your information the 1.4 COD uses the 7-speed dry-clutch s-tronic which some regard as not so good as the 6-speed wet-clutch s-tronic used in all the 2.0TDIs. Personally I have only ever driven using the 6-speed which I've had in my last four A3s and my current 2.0TDI-184 Sportback quattro and have no complaints and would no longer wish to drive anything without a s-tronic.

Cannot comment on 1.4 COD v 2.0TDI because I've never driven one as I much prefer the longer range and greater torque of the 2.0TDI. So far I've had a 2.0TDI in 140, 140 remapped, two 170s and now a 184 quattro. Needless to say the 184 quattro is by far the best.

The minute a 2.0TDI blasts past you, you'll be thinking, "should have switched to the dark side!"

I've got a COD with S-Tronic and think its amazing, for a small engine it really does the job! It's super quiet and went you need the power it does feel as though it's there. I've come from an A1 1.6 TDI and don't miss the engine gurgle at all.

As you've said the 184 diesel isn't out yet and if you don't want to wait then you'll have the 150. Which is only 10ps more than the 1.4 COD and would weigh a bit more too, 90kg more. All depends on whether you're after power or economy and whether you think you'll make up the extra £1,200 in the course of your ownership through fuel savings / depreciation.

After having driven both the 2.0l diesel will not be blasting past you and might actually have difficulty keeping up in the twisty bits due to it being front end heavy. I went for a manual as I felt the s-tronic wasn't worth the extra £1500...

The performance is near enough identical, so is the combined mpg, the COD has a superb refined engine at town speeds plus no DPF worries.

All those factors combined with the £1,500 price difference made the COD a no brainer for me.

I personally after driving both would go for the COD. It's quiet, smooth and works really well with the S-Tronic. Have had both this engine and the 184 Quattro version as courtesy cars. The COD is super quite and found it more than quick enough day to day - it feels much lighter and think that helps on the twisty stuff. Can't argue with the price difference either.

I would go for S-line over Sport too - personally think it looks better in this trim and the spec is good. Worth the extra.

I had the 2.0tdi 170 s-tronic on my previous A3, so thought the obvious choice was to go for the new 2.0 150! However I had a long test drive in the diesel and then the 1.4 COD S-tronic and I was more than impressed with the engine and smooth transmission.

I have had mine for 3 weeks now and do not regret it one bit, the engine is super quiet and getting impressive MPG even on initial running in, I do not see any problems with the 7speed and it runs just a nice a my previous A3.

I do the same journey to work week and I can honestly say that I have saved money compared to my previous A3 diesel what with the cheaper fuel.

I am running a brim test to see how much I get out of a full tank considering it is 5 litres smaller than the last A3.

Please keep us (me) posted with this. I am awaiting delivery of mine, albeit a manual, and am interested in 'real world' mpg/range.

I will let you know - crazy journey on Thursday with DIS showing 60mpg as the was in coasting mode and 2 cylinder mode most of the time.

Surely the amount of miles you do will affect your decision as I can't believe the COD is as economical as the TDi if you do significant mileage.

I do circa 20k a year...so the 2.0 TDi was the only sensible choice

(ps I've the manual box so can't comment over which of the autos is better)

The Audi website has a fuel calculator on it. It predicted, over 3 years and 13k miles pa I'd be about £400 better of with the COD over the 184 TDI. Obviously, it's just a rough calculation, but I'm guessing the break even point for the 184 is around 15k..... Maybe slightly more for the 150PS?

Just done it again and now it claims I'm £153 better off with a tdi over 3 years....whaaaaa?

According to the Audi fuel calculator, the COD is more efficient on extra-urban miles - the TDI is more efficient on the Urban miles (enough to make the overall efficiency higher when looking at the combined)... not what I would have expected for sure....

Agreed, one up on twisty country roads the COD has the edge. But if you are looking for in gear performance even when fully loaded on a motorway the Diesel wins .

It's interesting to compare the stats. S-tronic figures in brackets.

Max speed
COD 132 (132)
TDI 134 (132)

0-60
COD 8.4 (8.4)
TDI 8.7 (8.4)

MPG urban
COD 47.9 (47.9)
TDI 56.5 (52.3)

MPG extra urban
COD 67.3 (68.9)
TDI 76.3 (62.8)

MPG combined
COD 58.9 (60.1)
TDI 67.3 (62.8)

Emissions
COD 112 (110)
TDI 108 (119)

Unladen weight
COD 1225 (1235)
TDI 1310 (1320)

Was that the 150ps this time?

No, the 184, for a 150PS it said I'd be £350 or so better off.
Having initially ordered a COD, it is a lovely engine. It was the smoothness, refinement and surprising swiftness that won me over. Crikey, the more I think about it the more I think I dropped a clanger! :ermm: Well, almost......

Migwire what made you change your mind?

Thanks all for the feedback, definitely going for the sline, it's a tough one on the engine tho

I drove a Focus TDCI before this so was already leaning towards a diesel, but an A1. When we went to view an A1 it was too small so I enquired about the A3 and he suggested trying the COD and the petrol won me over, then, as you do after ordering your new Audi, I sat reading the brochure and internet to death. I noticed that for the price I was paying for an S Line COD, I could have a 184 TDI Sport, and thought to myself, if I buy a COD, and a 184 flies past, I'll so regret it, so opted for that instead. The 184 is a flying machine for a diesel, and has one hell of a punch when you set it away and ride that huge wave of torque. Thing is......I now regret not getting it in S Line trim....... Already looking at ditching it.....7 weeks in. Thinking S Line with quattro. I won't just yet though, the wife will disown me!! Hehe

The Saloon S-Line does look the "Cyanistes caeruleus", are you definitely set on the Saloon or would you consider the 184 Sportback?

Looking at the difference in price between the 150ps and the 184ps Sportbacks its an increase of around £2500. One would then expect the 184 Saloon to be priced at around £25,500. Which coincidentally is the price of an S3... can you see where this is going? :eyebrows:

In Sportback, the 184 is around £1300 or so more than a 150PS TDI. S3's are over £30k.

I was referring to the S-Tronic prices at the Basic RRP :)

Just a foot note, the extra £1200 difference would be the Quattro as you don't seem to be able to get the 184 S-Tronic without it.
S3 Sportback Manual at Basic RRP is £25,366.67 and S-Tronic £26,600.00. But yeah those prices are far off the OTR price!!
