In my old 1.9TDI 130 Golf I could happily cruise along the motorway at around 2,000rpm and return a decent 50+mpg. However in my crappy 308 2.0TDI 140 my motorway mpg has always been poor at mid 40's.

So yesterday driving back from Heathrow on the M3 i set the cruise control at a speed to give me 2,000rpm in 6th and had to drop to 68mph. Whilst this gave me an impressive 62.7mpg, a record for the car in the 3.5yrs I've had it, I've never had to willingly drive so slow on the motorway. I was bordering on dangerously slow because the scenery passed by so slowly that my mind began to wander off the road!

So, I'm hoping my new A3 2.0TDI 140 will run at a higher speed and still return decent mpg. If you have one, can you let me know at what speed you're doing at 2,000rpm in 6th?

Ta.

My 170 is awful on the motorway at anything over 75ish, 80-85mph sees me about 38-40mpg

Not sure if the 140 is the same though

my trip said 65.6mpg at 70mph the other day on about a 2 hour drive at that speed the whole way..(i was well bored too)

not sure what the revs were though sorry..was around 2k

You need to specify what engine, the new post 2008 engine or the old pre 2008 PD engine. I have the 2006 140TDI.

At 70mph, I get about 40-43mpg, and can't really go any faster due to the traffic (this is my daily commute). On the whole I get 42-43mpg from full true tank fulls (my DIS is surprisingly accurate too).

I'll tell you the true speed I get at 2000rpm once I get home.

I'm not happy with my economy, as I had the same 130TDI golf as you which returned a true 48-50mpg.

Hi,

Just put in the internals of a Ibiza Sport gearbox (FJW code) and you should get this on 6th:

Gweev, as the signature, I have a 2006 TDI 140, BKD engine. 2000 rpm on motorway gives me 19.5 kms/liter = 55.1 mpg with the climate control on. With the climate control off, this goes up to 20 Kms/liter = 56.5 mpg. Engine mapping is stock, with generally two people on-board with luggage. I love it.

About 70ish at 2000 rpm, i usually drive at about 80mph and get about 50+mpg.
Tried driving at 65 once, got 60mpg but was so bored i vowed never to do it again.

It will be the new one. Ordering it in a few weeks, delivery.....Sep/Oct!

What I'm thinking is I'll never acheive anywhere near the published mpg coz I'm not prepared to drive like a coffin-dodger!

In my 308 I had to do 68mph to get the revs down to 2,000 to acheive decent mpg. My normal speed of 80ish returns mid 40's mpg at 2,500rpm, and I'm hoping that the A3 allows me to keep my normal speed but return better mpg by revving lower.

Trust me you won't be dissapointed mate. The lowest i get is about 40mpg and thats with a hard thrashing!

On my car its 66mph which is lower than I thought it would be.

My speedo reads 70ish so in reality it probably is about 66

At 70mph the revs are 2200 rpm to get 2000rpm you need to be at 66 mph this is all on cruse set which iv found to very close to actual speed forgot to look at pmg but its normal for over 50mpg at 70-80 mpg for me hope this helps.

Had a quick test with my TDI170 and was at about 60 at just under 2krpm - on an A-Road and had to slow down for a 30 zone, but I'd put my money on 65mph too

So 87mph.

Also, your transmission light is on.
Hi. Not my car. A friend of mine did the gearbox conversion and gets much more decent mpg... Also that light is due to having the intake flap disabled... Cheers
