T'was wondering if any of you guys/gals know what the similarities are between the S3 and TT excluding the engine.

I am having a discussion with someone at work who thinks the TT is just a pretty S3. Is this true, do they share the same floor plan and running gear?

He also reckons the TT is as good to drive as the S3.

Any info so i can /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burningmad.gif him would be useful.

Cheers

Might be wrong here, but I thought the only difference between the two was the anti roll bars?

Someone will be here to tell me otherwise soon...

The TT and S3 are technically identical. Some minor differences in setup but other than that they are the same.

Hmmm, some humble pie may need to be eaten here.

So why do people say that the S3 is the better drivers car if the TT is the same?

i think the TT was just set up softer because the pansie's that drive them complain there too much of a handfull.... basicly the type of person who buys a TT cant drive aswell as a person who buys an S3 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

LOL

I have an S3 but have driven different types of TT. or some reason, I just don't like the feel of the TT! It feels too clumsy compared to the S. Just my 2pence.

Ah yes Rich...but it's these differences that make the S3 the better drivers car.

The TT is heavier.

The S3 has a better ARB set up vs it's weight (compared to the 'revised' TTs anyway)

The S3 has better brake cooling...

The S3 has less weight over the rear compared to a TT...but it carries it's weight slightly higher...but the TT has stiffer rear dampers...
Personally, I think the S3 turns in better than the TT because of it's design.

The two are not the same to drive...subjectively, they are quite different...and I find the better visibility of the S3 makes it a far easier car to drive quickly.

kind of what i was saying...but the depth does help for a more ful explananation. lol. I was meaning that the basics are the same as in you can swap most parts from one ar to the other.

i hate the interior of the TT you cant get a good driving position and the visibility is useless!!!

[/ QUOTE ]

True, it's really hard to see your new haircut and italian calfskin loafers reflected in shop windows in the TT...

I had a TT as a courtesy car last year sometime, has anyone else that's driven one on a bright day got really /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/swear.gif off with the exposed air vent pipe detail thingys on the dashboard, I found myself constantly being distracted by there reflection in the windscreen - most annoying, I asked another TT owner at a different visit to the garage and he said he'd never noticed it... are TT drivers blind or is this just me being mad?

[ QUOTE ]
t... are TT drivers blind or is this just me being mad?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't think they are blind...
They just spend most of their time looking out of the side windows at their reflection in shop windows....and hence never notice reflections in the windscreen!

Hi mate...didnt realise it was you. Hows things? You still got the A3?

Rich

Im all good, i havnt got the A3 anymore /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif A few of my mates started getting bikes and i felt left out, so i did my bike test and the Audi had to go so i could get a bike and a car. Good old Audi resale values /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I now have a Pug 306 GTI 6 and a Kawasaki ninja.

I was having this chat with a guy about the TT and i thought who better to ask than the guys/gals who know the most about Audi's........you lot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

How are you? i see from your sig that you got a serious amont of power now.

is the setup pretty much the same on the 1.8T Q and TDi Q sports to the S3 ?

S3s also get the fully electric recaros.

some £1500 quid each.

TT doesnt get them

So we are all basically saying that the S3 has everything the TT has and then some; is cheaper to buy, isn't as poncey, is a lot rarer (and therefore much cooler), and handles slightly better.

So lets all sit back, rest on our laurels and give ourselves a hearty pat on the back at purchasing the right Audi.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

Cheaper to buy?! I thought the TT was a mass produced roadster, the S3 a limited edition hot hatch?

I hear what you say gek, but some people will insist on following "fashion" and Audi are more than willing to charge those "victims" for their short sightedness.

How many S3's in my car park at work? 1 - mine. How many TT's? Loads. Although I can't verify this I bet I get a lot more comments and admiring glances than the TT owners I work with. I often get questions/comments at work (the S3 badge and wide stance always attract attention from the less knowledgeable and compliments from those in the know)....not that I'm bothered by this sort of thing. I'm not a fashion victim...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I see you're in the Herts area gek. Where do you get your S3 serviced? Mines due in the next couple of weeks. Was thinking Amersham, but have heard bad reports. My other option is Hitchin.

hehehe I think the only thing I agree with in this thread is that the S3 got better seats than the TT!

p.s. Do S3 owners not count A3's when commenting on how common cars are? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

i knew you'd be along mate ;o)

theres not alot in it, i wanted a tt, just couldnt handle the looking out of a letterbox driving style, and feeling crampt at 6ft 3, but your same height as me and managed.

i dont consider the A3 at all.

S3 is totally different beast.

much the same as i dont count the A4, when i see an S4 or RS4.

I like the excusivity of the S3, i dont see them very often. 1 or 2 a month if lucky.,

rather than 1 , 2 or more TT's every trip.

I take it to Lea Valley mate as it's close to work (Enfield).
I wouldn't touch Amersham with a barge pole from what I've heard, but I would go to Hitchin as I've only heard good things about them.

Isn't it a bit unfair to compare the S3 to the TT - there are 4 different TTs aren't there?

By my reckoning there's the 150bhp 2wd - equivalent to the 1.8T Sport, the 180bhp Quattro - equivalent to the 1.8TQ, the 225bhp quattro - equivalent to the S3 and the 3.2 V6 quattro - no equivalent in the 8L. How does the TT compare to these equivalents?

I really like the TT. I would have one and nearly did buy one a couple of years ago.

I agree there are lots of them on the road but thay are still a nice looking motor!

Well, I think that's my mind made up. Hitchin it is (that's closer to where I work anyway).

I like TT's and they are a good looking car and to be honest the fact that there are loads of them about wouldn't prevent me having one and the same goes for the boxster, but I do like the fact that the S3 is rare. That's also why I like the Honda NSX. It's rarity always makes me turn my head when I see one.

Oh, oh, now I'm thinking about what I'd like next..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif

Not quite fair... the 1.8T is a fair bit lighter & therefore faster than the 150bhp 2wd, and the 1.8TQ is faster than the 180bhp quattro (weight again). The bog standard 1.8T is about the same speed as the TT 180 quattro although I would've thought the handling would be better on the TT due to the 4wd.

[/ QUOTE ]
I did try to find some definitive ones for my post before, but couldn't. Best I can come up with is quoted 0-62 times vs. weight (and not from the same source, so not definitely reliable):

150 TT - 8.9
180 TT - 8.2, 1465 kg
225 TT - 6.9, 1465 kg

A3 1.8T 8.1, 1150kg
A3 1.8TQ 7.5, 1450kg

TT times are from the Audi website, A3 8L times & weights and TT weights are from www.carfolio.com. TT weights & times are for the roadster (I foresee a can of worms here!!).

Sorry, can't find any quoted weights for the 150bhp TT.

Interestingly a mate of mine with a 225 TT coupe weighed his on the weighbridge at the local tip and it came out at about 1550kg. I think the factory might be using "Japanese motorbike dry weight" measures - i.e. no fluids at in the engine, battery or windscreen washer reservoirs, helium in the tyres etc. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

At the end of the day neither is 'better' than the other. It simpy comes down to what meets your demands and wallet and where you're happy to compromise.

Somehow I don't think choosing one over the other suddenly makes you a shirt lifter or a heteosexual. I'm sure both own both cars. Considering they're so similar in construction I have to wonder if the it's the femine side of S3 owners coming out that makes them make these comments. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/love_4.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

Well, I've got an S3 and my wife has a TT, so I drive both. Personally I prefer the S3, more of a drivers car out on the road. But, I prefer the TT when going out over twisty back roads. Heather prefers the TT over my S3, so I guess it really comes down to which you like.

Roy.

ah there's the solution - get one of each /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ok.gif

I considered a TT but wanted more space in the back and a boot so I got an S3. TTs are also VERY common but they are design classics.

I do think they are hairdressers cars though too. Saw a bloke in a convertible TT today with shades on and the wind rushing through his hair - he did look a bit gay I must admit.

I often wonder what TT owners think of S3s, perhaps we should post this question on the TT forum?

Strangely they're a lot more mature about it and see the S3 as a family member. Many more enlightened S3 owners have attended TT trackdays.

I guess all the hairdressers doing track days may be a little to risky to take on for all you real men!

p.s. All said tongue in cheek as the banter is all a big laugh! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
