I currently have my A3, its a 1.8t tuned to 230bhp with all the supporting mods, its also got coilovers, uprated ARBs etc, and most recently a nice pair of Sparco V sprints.
Now my problem, I currently have to travel around 50-60 miles a day for work, and the a3 is starting to become slightly impractical, coupled with the rising fuel costs and also the comfort factor.
Selling the a3 is not an option, after a small session at combe on saturday I have fallen in love with it all over again and want to follow in mr Prawns foot steps with my car.
I've been looking at getting a cheapish car for work, as well as having the a3 for the weekends.
My question is, what would you guys recommend for a cheapish second car for work? I have around the 2K mark and ideally i want it to be good on fuel as well as being comfortable.
Any ideas?

Cheers

Liam

would £2k buy you a 6n2 polo tdi? that'd be nice, it'd definitely buy you a 1.9tdi A3, haha, or mk4 golf if you wanted to stick with what you know.

Otherwise, a 306 HDI dare I say it? epic MPG and decent grunt for super cheap.....

Id be looking for a PD115 golf myself I think

oh, and EXCELLENT choice on going down the track route with the a3 dude!

Youre seats are lovely too, really gutted that I now fit in them after selling them to you :(

a half decent mk4 golf tdi seem to go for silly money these days!
Prawn, yeah you are my inspitration! lol, looking for some lcr brembos as we spreak, as standard single pot s3 brakes are officially poo when hot!!
all cheap small diesels seem to have such high mileage!!

Personally I would go diesel, there are some cheap petrol cars out there, but small ultra frugal petrols are likely to be slow, not much fun or comfortable for a 50-60 mile daily commute. Personally I would go VAG group....however you won't get as much for your money when compared to say Peugeot, 306 HDI's are a good shout. Maybe a TDI Seat Ibiza/Leon/Toledo or a Skoda Octavia/Fabia, you are likely to get more for your money than the equivalent VW/Audi models. I wouldn't be put off high mileage diesels as long they have been serviced regularly, plus if it has had some major components renewed recently ie clutch/turbo, it potentially means less expense for you. I know of someone with a MK4 PD100 Golf that done well in excess of 200k miles and its been nothing but reliable apart from a few routine bits, has always had its oil changed every 10k. There are a fair few high milers on this forum as well.

that A3 looks like a great motor for £1800 dude, I'd definitely be going for something like that. Sportstractor (James in the blue S3 on sautrday) had a remapped mk4 110tdi and it was awesome, hence the Sportstractor name!

my runabout (which mrsb is using currently) is an arosa 1.4tdi 3cyl thing..
remapped (of course), 100bhp/160lbft pocket rocket.... and 65mpg!
fun little thing

I actually quite like those little arosas bill, how are they from day to day? they do seem very small!
