Thanks for all the advice and replies, they're all greatly appreciated. For now I've vowed to take my eye of the MPG until at least 1000 miles and just enjoy the car - it is a fantastic little engine, very quiet, very smooth and offers alot better drive than the 1.6 Petrol I've come from.
