Worthy Purchase? Cruise control

A good price assuming you can get the paint off!

You'll need a lower cowel for the steering column, if you only had range before you'll need a washer water sensor or to ground that circuit and of course vag com.

The wiper stalk looks like an avant one to me!

Cheers Chris

Will it matter i have a saloon?
Looks like it has dis on it too?

Looking at Boya's full kit he's sold.
The control unit looks like, the bit that will be coming with mine anyway.

Can anyone confirm. Sorry to ask so much.

1st link :icon_thumright:
Excellent!
So everything I've already paid for + Vagcom enroute i should have cruise control and full DIS once fitted and i've worked out how to use vagcom lol

if it does end up being for an avant, can i get first dibs :D.

If it is for an Avant, will it still be ok for the Saloon?
Nutkin, you can't reply. That's unfair! lol

The avant version just pushes backwards to activate the rear windscreen wiper and washer so i can't see it would be a problem on the saloon it just wont do anything. I made the mistake of buying one for a saloon for my avant and had to flog it to a member on here so i could buy the avant version instead.

I bought the bits off Boya so i too will have the DIS and Cruise to add to my A4 when my VAGcom cable arrives so i too will be learning how to code my car soon so will keep my on how you get on blackquat :)

Ah excellent to hear!
No Bob, i shall be watching you to see how you get on before i touch mine! haha
How do you find that box in your car btw.

Never had an Auto before but my back decided to pop a disc back in september so using a clutch became a very painful process.

Only had this car since Feb but so far its been very good and the gear changes nice n smooth plus my left leg really appreciates the rest it get on drives now :)

Well i have to wait for the bits from Boya to arrive plus i am still waiting for my VAGcom cable so as you will have the bits before me i think its only fair you go first lol.

Do you think anyone can tell were a bit scared of this retrofit malarky??

Nah, I think we're still pulling off the 'manly working on cars' look.
Besides, after we've done it. We can go back, edit our posts to. "bet its easy as" and it's plain sailing!

It all about the confidence im sure plus it aint rocket science really well that what i keep telling myself anyway.

It'll be fine.
If i can fit engines, rebuild them and convert a vectra to 6 speed. I'll cope lol

can you take pics as you do it, need something to follow and blame when i **** mine up trying it. If i ever find a cheap stalk set.

The thing that worries me most so far from what i have read is the gronding of Pin 1 of the instument cluster when doing the DIS retrofit to stop the low washer warning happening as i know other have dome it but i have not seen any pics of this being done so still a tad in the dark as to what exactly to do.

oh and of course the coding especially the SWCM as i belive you have to recode it to your car as they hold the info of the last car they were fitted to.

I have read this thread over on tyresmoke http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/audi-a4-s4-cabrio/68576-retro-fitting-dis-cruise-a4-b6.html as it seems to be the most complete in its info for retrofitting both DIS and CC in a B6.

Well It's all here, lovely!
It's not an avant one either.
Hoping to get it done saturday, Just learning vagcom atm.
I assume the steering wheel has to come off?

Well as you have the kit first so you can take the plunge first.

If you can get a chance to take any photos as you do the install that would be ace as i am still nervous about it.

I will indeed mate, I'll be doing it saturday.
I just need to cofirm the steering wheel is coming off?

Greeeeat lol
Thank you muchly!
Every car I've ever had the stalks can be changed with the wheel on. TUT!

VRbob
I have a confession, I set about it today, finished it and completely forgot to take a single photo!
But i can talk you through it full if you like bud?
Really sorry about that, I'm like a dog with a bone when i start doing something. Took 30 mins to fit though, so its dead easy.

No worries it was only if you had time,

Did you just install Cruise Control or did you do the DIS upgrade at the same time?

If you did do the DIS upgrade how hard was it to do the grounding of pin 1?

Did both bud,
In fact I've JUST done the grounding.
So I took photos as i remember you saying that was the bit you were worried about.
So here we go!
25032010159.jpg

The blue connecter with the purple end. Slide the purple bit down.
25032010160.jpg

This allows the white insert to slide out.
25032010161.jpg

I then got some fine guage wire, pressed it into the Number 1 slot, and pressed it in well with a screw driver.
Slide the blue part back over, pop on the purple end.

Then just undo one of the earths on the bulk head and attach to that.
Easy peasy Bob!

Hope this helps too.
Remove the underdash panel, it's held on with a bolt on the side of the dash behind the panel.
Then 2 bolts under the panel, it's just clipped into the dash under the trim too.
Remove this, then the lower column cowling is held on by 2 screws near the steering wheel side. Also 1 Allen key bolt under where the column adjuster is.
With the lower dash panel out, you can remove the lower cowling.
You can then just push the upper cowling up out of the way. Its attached by a leather peice so won't come off easily.

Next is the steering wheel.
By now you should have disconnected the battery to make the airbag 'safe'
There are 2 screws holding in the airbag to the wheel. Once these are undone your airbag will come away from the steering wheel. Unplug the airbag by popping up the clip and pull gently from the airbag.
Undo the bolt holding in the steering wheel in, not 100% on the bolt size. It's something like a 8 or 10mm spline.
At this point i used a screw driver to drag a scratch down the column and the wheel. This is to mark the position of the wheel on the column.
Pull the wheel away, mine came away pretty easy. Hopefully yours will be the same.
Once the wheel is off, you can see the slip ring.
There are 3 clips to it, 2 on top 1 underneithe. UNclip these and it will pull away. There is one yellow airbag connection on the top of it. It will unclip fairly easily.
To remove the stalks, it's held on by 1 allen key bolt on the underside.
UNdo and the stalks will slide off the end of the column, disconnect the wires connected to the rear of it.

Fitting is reverse of removal ;)

Don't think I've missed anything!

Just a point to make, when i did it all. The cruise didn't work. I remember reading something about bypassing the clutch switch. Bingo works now.

Does this mean i need a new clutch switch? It's blue if that matters.

Cheers mate that looks really helpful,

Having a visual reference is always a handy thing to have especially when to comes to electrics.

Soon as my cable arrives i will get to it, until then i have my new tuning box fitted so i will be seeing what results i get from that till then.

nice write up, although you dont really need to disconnect the battery and the the spline is a 12mm

Yeah that was top work by BlackQuat am very grateful for the pics.

Cheers for the update 1wheel

Ah nice one, I couldn't remember the size. I tried a 12mm spline but it seemed too big. The one i had to use has been on the bench grinder so has no numbers on. (only way i could make it fit into a mk2 golf cylinder head)
I wasn't sure about needing to disconnect the battery, worries me to death lol.

Dammit nice sunny sunday afternoon so thought i would give this ago and basically stumped at the first hurdle!

Got the underdash cover off ok went to remove the lower steering wheel cover which i believe has allen key screws in it and havnt got anything the will reach the buggers as all my allen keys are bits to fit in a screwdriver which is then too wide to go in the hole in the cover :(

So put it back together now and will try and source a thinner screwdriver with allen key tips (if anyone knows the exact size that would help with my shopping list)

So DIS n CC postponed for now

It's a trox you need, there was a thread ages ago. I bought the item it suggested and cut the handle back so it reaches.

I'll get it out and take a photo for you.

Cheers Chris

I was undecided from looking at it if it was a torx or allen head (upside down with a torch isnt the most useful position)

If you can dig out a pic and let me know which size torx head that would be superb

Yeah its a right pain as its so small but they are Torx.

This is what I used, a T8 x 60mm from Halfords but it needs to be 70mm so I cut the handle back to get the reach.

Chris

i used a long terminal screwdriver once, that worked a treat and got me out of a mess when i forgot my torx
