Wanted to know the power of my car before I remapped it so went to john mowett in wickford who use an old school dyno and couldn't handle the power of my car, kept spinning when on boost. So couldn't get a proper reading, got to about 170 at the wheels, also as you will notice I'm only running FWD.

This vid is of the exhaust note, you can't hear it very well on here but my god it was awesome.


I then went to track n road in rainham who are a bit more up to date with their equipment and got a graph showing how poo my car is which was due to the fact that I have a boost controller, increasing my boost by 0.2bar. It's given me loads of low done torque but lost a lot of top end bhp and as you can see by the graph below the boost is all over the place.

If you can not read it very well, it's 205.4bhp at 6334rpm and 207.3lb/ft at 4066rpm

I wished I had mine Dyno'ed prior to mapping,good bit of data for you to build upon
 
I didn't do a rolling road reading but did do before and after VAGCOM logs logging boost, BHP, torque, and MAf readings. I know its not as acurate as a RR but at least I could see the increase.
 
redline mag ages ago did a dyno test on a load of products on a 225 TT. the K&N cone lost 10-15bhp
 
that was the power loss with the bonnet up! the cone just didnt flow as well as an airbox at that power level
 
presuming your car is standard (apart from cone filter), for a 1999 engine i would say that the power and torque outputs are good!
 
why wont a large cone filter be helping?

Even ran a straight through with no filter IIRC and RR'd - no benefit over standard....a member recently stated an increase in air flow over their standard airbox (assuming KO4 fitted) but then is an increase in airflow better if that air is actually warmer?......hence why most go for 4" cold feed into standard air box

always open to your thoughts Bill but nobodies proven otherwise yet - whats your experiences with this as i assume you disagree?

i do disagree on this from logs i have on cars i work on...
the assumption is enclosed filters will be better.... but better in what way... less hot air drawn in, yep.. nice to have..
in airflow terms from enclosed to open cone, i see significant more airflow for example between bmc filter and JR open cone on an s3 (hybrid)

not every induction kit is helping thats clear.. but a lot of people want sounds, bling, and performance is not top of their list so each to their own.
stock airbox with good flowing filter and larger intake will flow well... without doubt
when you start pushing decent high airflows from BT however.. maf housings are too small for the airflows and larger induction tract helps..
all proportional to where you are on the ladder of bhp and airflow

Somthing I would like to add to this that I've been thinking about, When a remapped 1.8T suffers from the TIP colapse this is got to be caused by a restriction @ the filter/maf area, If you were able to run the engine with just the TIP and nothing after it there wouldn't be any resistance on the end of the TIP & it wouldn't colapse. Has anybody seen a stock TIP colapse with a better flowing air filter set up? Whats you opinion on this Bill?

Yup i completely agree Bill...... cone has seemed to be a regular on BT's

Biggied, nobody on here whilst ive been on has ever witnessed a TIP collapse....only Forge who ahem want to sell the silicone TIP's seem to have any evidence of this...and i think IIRC that was on a very early TT....if you look at the pre BAM engine the TIP had a metal sheathing around the bend that is supposed to collapse, this would have been the same timescale of the 'said' TT and so i conclude the S3 hasnt suffered from this problem.... or we haven't heard of it
