Power Steering Fluid? Where does it go?

Have a weird droning/whirring noise coming from the steering, after searching the forum it maybe haldex oil change or the power steering fluid. I'll go for the cheaper option first the power steering fluid but I don't know where to change this? Anyone got any pics? Or can you direct me in the right direction please?

Is it just a case of topping it up? Will I know if it is low?

on the power steering reservoir once you have undone the cap it should have a little dipstick on it, so if its between the lines its not your power steering thats making the noise!
if it is low, there may be quite alot of air bubbles on the top, if it has been making the noise for a while? top it up with the power steering fluid and turn the steering lock to lock a few times making sure the fluid gets around the system then check the level again! and repeat if necessary!
Could do with checking for any leaks tho! you shouldnt have to top it up really! check for any visible leaks around the pipes and rack! and it has been known for the rack to leak into the gaiters and fill them up! they are on the end of the rack so undo them just to make sure the seals in the rack are ok! if alot of fluid comes out, its a new rack i'm afraid!

I found out this the hard way. had to get a new rack!

Yep defo use main dealer OEM fluid, only costs about £7 for a bottle....so makes sense to do so at that cost.

Nonsense!

It's just scaremongering from VAG, so they can sell more of their PS fluid. There is no conclusive evidence to prove otherwise.

perhaps not, but it's quite clearly a different type of oil with a very different consistency to normal ATF used in PAS systems.

I refilled mine with ATF, and 6 months later the rack was completely dead, with fluid pouring out of each end at a rate of around half a litre/50 miles driving.
