Hi all

I have a A4 cabrio 1.8T 163bhp (B7). I have had the car for 10 months now. Was bought brand new. When I got it coolant level was at max. After 4 months the level was at minimum. The dealership said this was normal and to top it up again with water. It has been about 2 months since it's first service and the level has dropped from max to halfway again! They said there is no leak. Is this normal? Has anyone had similar problems? I would be gratefull if someone could help me by shedding some light on this matter.

thanks

Does not sound normal to me mate!

My car was serviced 8 months ago and it is only slightly below max! and thats after almost 10,000 miles!

I agree with you. I read somewhere that the 1.8T engines generate alot of heat which made me think maybe it might be evaporating or something like that. I was just wondering if other people with the same engines had the same problem. Plus the fact that the local dealership just say it is normal. I'm feeling a little lost.

Go to another dealer, or an independant.

It is a sealed system, so it can't evaporate away! Check around your engine bay for any White deposits, this is normally what that hot fluid leaves behind. It will only be a tiny leak if it's only dropping by that much.
Alternatively, check your oil filler cap for a "White emulsion", if you have got that, you have water leaking into your engine but i'm sure the dealer will have checked for that.
They onlysay things are "normal" when it's too much hassle for them to look.
