Hi Guys,

This is something I know very little about and need some help please.
My S3 has built in sav nav, its deffo an audi unit but im not sure if it has been retro fitted from another car as the is a 5mm gap at the top of the unit.

My issues are (bear with me I have a few):

- It has a nav cd but it doesnt work and the screen says the cd is defective, do these cds expire after a certain time?
- I tried playing an audio cd by putting it in the slot but it wouldn't work, is this only made to read nav cds and not audio ones?
- When watching tv/ listening to a cd there is some feedback coming through the speakers like a whuuring sound, could this be an earth issue?
- When I picked the car up in London I got good radio signal but now I am home in outer Surrey I can't get any signal? Could it be that the aerial is not connected properly and I only got singal in london because the signal is alot stronger up there? I never have issues with getting singals in other cars around here?

I would really appreciate someones feedback on these questions as I am stumped.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the CD drive needs repairing/cleaning to me. it aslo sounds like its a retrofit from another model, the internals are the same its the panel fit that alters.

Ok thanks so I'll get a lens cleaner and see if that helps that problem, am I right in thinking that I should be able to play audio cds in this drive?

Quite often they are for Nav CD's only. Is there not a 6 disk changer in the boot behind the left hand panel??

Nav CD's don't expire. Unless the CD is phyically damaged/scratched it should work but just not be up to date.

The noise while watching TV could be numerous problems. It could be interference due to a weak TV signal (most likely), or like you said a connection or earth fault.

Thanks, yes I do have a changer in the boot which I am using but was just curious as to weather I could play audio cds from the front.

I get the interferience when listening to cds as well so i guess it wouldnt be due to a weak tv signal and more like an earth fault. How would I go about finding and fixing the earth? Am I right that a lot of stereos take their earth from the aerial which would explain why I cant get radio reception and have the interference?

Your Sat Nav system should be an RNS-D. This is the one with the central screen and the two knobs either side of it. The later model which can be retrofitted is an RNS-E, this has a bigger screen and just the one knob to the left. It's most common to fit an RNS-E from an Audi A4 and this normally means there is a gap at the top where most people fit a metal strip
The RNS-D uses CDs, the RNS-E uses DVDs. You can't play normal CDs in the head unit, it is just for the Sat Nav disc, hence you have a CD changer as well. If your TV Tuner is a factory fit unit it will be in the boot near the CD changer, and sticks out the side like a sore thumb. The antennas for the TV are built into the rear window. If it's somewhere else it's been retrofitted. If your ariel on the roof is a normal bee sting ariel then your Sat Nav is retrofitted as well. If it is original to the car you will have a shark fin type aerial. http://www.audiforum.us/ is a good place to look for info on Audi sat navs. Or try Gareth at Hazzy Dayz if your really struggling to get it sorted http://www.vwcruise.com/

Good info.

Finding the earth problem could be hard but i'd agree to start at the antenna. Dirty connections etc? Needle in haystack? :)

Thanks for the responses. Well mine has one knob either side of the screen but does have the gap at the top. It has had free view added at some point and has had something done to it to make the tv stay on when the car is in motion. The guy I brought it from said the aerial for the freeview is just below the drivers rear light.

I have managed to sort out the radio reception by having a look behind the glove box and finding a connection that had pulled apart, I think this has also sorted out the whuuring sound.

Where can I get the piece of metal to fit into the gap at the top?

Thanks again

Anyone know where to get an up to date CD from ? Was thinking Mr Audi but i fear he will be expensive. :(

Ebay would be a good source see quite a few there.

I think its tele atlas or sumat, they sell new ones £110 region?
