I'm going to splash out on an RNS-e from the bay in a couple of months time and am wondering if I get an SDS version (I'm aware there is a hack available for non-SDS units), what else do I need to get the SDS bit working.

Do I need the full Bluetooth install or can I just get a mic and is everything else ready to go?

Any advice gratefully received.

You need the mic PLUS an MFSW - since the SDS is activated by pressing the PTT button on the MFSW.

My intention at the mo is to get the RNS-e and then have a MFSW installed, probably by primeprestige.com owing to the fact I'll need a new slipring, control unit, harness and steering wheel. I'll get a mic off ebay, whereabouts does the mic sit ie. do I need a new piece of interior plastic?

The mic fits in the interior light unit. The mounts are already there, so it just clips in.

I've done a bit of digging, so by the look of it, the RNS-E requires a harness (currently got a Symphony II) to connect the car to the RNS unit. Presumably the microphone attaches to the RNS harness?

Just getting my facts straight so I can get both at the same time although I won't be able to test until I get the MFSW.

It requires both a wiring adapter (to convert from ISO-style connectors to a Quadlock) and an antenna adapter (to convert from a Fakra plus "car" connector to a dual Fakra).

Presumably the microphone attaches to the RNS harness?
I don't know of any suplier of wiring adapters for the RNS-E that supplies SDS-ready ones - you'll have to add the microphone wiring yourself. That's what I had to do.

I'll have to badger you closer to the time :)
It's easy enough to do, just pop off the A pillar trim on the passenger side to run the wire between the mic and the RNS-E.

dave, im wanting to do this aswell, what cable/cables are involved and whats the connection and where do they go onto the rns-e?
sorry for all the questions mate

The RNS-E has Mic+ & Mic- In connections and Mic+ & Mic- Out connections (the paper label on the top gives the actual pinouts). You connect the normal Audi mic to the In pins, and the Out pins go to the Audi Bluetooth/Phone module (if you have one).

In theory you should use some kind of screened cable, but everyone I know has used ordinary wire without any problems.

dave, when you say an SDS RNS-E what do you mean? is mine not ? how do i know?
cheers

Infact do a scan with VAGCOM and that will tell you the part number of the unit

Hi, I am hoping some one here will be able to provide me extra detail.

I have installed a RNS-E unit (version T) into a A4 Cab (B7 2007) with MFSW. When I push the button on the steering wheel RNS-E unit says through the speakers say a command, so I was hoping to connect the microphone up to use the SDS function.

After researching microphone should be connected to plug C on the Quadlock as follows:
C1 Mic In -
C7 Mic In +

I have taken the interior light apart and there is two microphone present which run into one plug which has the following wires:
Blue
Brown
Green with Gray line
Reg with Green line

Can anyone tell me where the microphone wiring runs to (I guess down the passenger A pillar but where from here)?
And also how the four wires connect up to the RNS-E?

I would be gratefully for any advice.

the rnse has mic + & - (in) and (out)
you only require one mic, which goes to mic in on rnse then wire from rnse out to the bluetooth unit

Many Thanks 1wheelonly

Do you know which colour wires go to which mic:
Blue
Green with Gray line
Reg with Green line
Brown

I guess the wires with the traces(lines) are the Mic - but which combination?

Blue / Green with Gray line
Brown / Red with Green line

or

Blue / Red with Green line
Brown / Green with Gray line

Also I have been reading up on this and it looks like the cable ends up under the passenger seat is this correct?

Thanks

Ignore my last post, was looking at wrong plug.

All parts ordered, so hopefully will have it connected up early next week.
