I thought at 40,000 miles i required a oil change on the gearbox. Audi phoned me back saying i didnt.

Its a 2003 A4 1.8T Quattro.

5 speed Auto, but can change gear manually using the stick and move it up or down and also using the buttons on steering wheel.

Is its Multitronic, Triptronic, or DSG?

Also i was booked in for a Haldex service and they said my car doesnt have that, only A3 quattros have that.

Sounds like you have a tiptronic gearbox.

A4's have Torsen quattro systems - read THIS to learn the differences between Haldex (A3) and Torsen (A4) quattro systems.

Doesnt tiptronic require any servicing then?

Also is this meant to be the box that has all the trouble?:ermm:

Thanks for link btw

Audi will say the gearbox oil does'nt need to be changed/or much later/if at all ( some said that its sealed for life ?!) ... Thing is the gearbox life is much longer IF you change the oil at 40K ! Use only the genuine stuff, nothing else ! Ur box is made by ZF and is much much stronger than any VAG/getrag manufactured gearboxes ! It features an torque converter wich is able to put th power down nicely as its been designed for big power quattro engined cars ! Only major difference is the gear ratios as they specced for a petrol engine. I would consider a bigger oil cooler for the gearbox if i were you ! The factory one (built inside the cooling radiator!) is fine if you drive the car like miss Daisy !

gearbox cooler? all new to me!

Taking car to audi anyway as i get a slight hum/drone before the gears change. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesnt.

The multitronic is a continuously variable transmission, fitted to all front-wheel drive A4 Automatics, with the exception of the 3.0L or 3.2L V6s engined-models which have traditional auto boxes with torque converters. All Quattro A4s Automatics (i.e four-wheel-drive) have traditional auto with torque converter. Both boxes also include a Tiptronic mode for sequential manual changes.

The multitronic is the one which must have an oil change every 40,000 miles.

Multitronics were also recalled on the TDI's due to the old 6 plate clutch not handlign the torue very well.... and some were replaced on the 1.8T and 3.0 petrols, but at cost to the owners...
