Insurance While Test Driving?

Wonder if anyone can help - I'm hunting for an A3 just now but have sold my previous car and the insurance has run out. Therefore I have no 'can drive other cars third party' cover.

Can anyone tell me what the options are when trying to test drive a car privately? Is there such a thing as test drive insurance?

A friend recently got 6 points for driving without insurance while taking an old car to an auction to get rid of it and I don't fancy 6 points much!!

I think you are covered by the dealers insuance provided it is an accompanied test drive.

Ive never been asked to prove I am insured when taking test drives which makes me think that its not a problem

That's correct with regard to dealers, however the OP was asking about private test drives.

I think you may be stuck on this - I've not heard of any sort of policy to cover this, though someone else may know of something

I stand to be corrected, but I don't think that's right.
The missus and I are the only named drivers on the policy.
We're both covered to drive other cars, third party only.
But our policy doesn't cover other people driving our car.
I'm sure of it.

In your case, your old man must have added you as a named driver, or he was just taking a chance.

If it's a test drive with a dealer then you're covered by the dealers insurance. If it's a private sale then, unless the person selling the car has 'any driver' on their insurance certificate you would not be covered.

The same applies if you want someone else to driver your car. A lot of insurance policies these days are based on 'named drivers' and they are the only one covered. Some policies do allow someone else to drive in, for example, a medical emergency.

In the past I have added my brother as a named driver to my policy for a day so that he can try my car. Usually the insurance company has not charged me any extra for this.

Out of sheer interest, have/would any of you let someone test drive a car you're selling?
Either alone or accompanied?
I never have, either option.
I'll take them out in it, no problem, but I always drive.
I've never had anyone kick off about it.
If they did, they'd be given the opportunity to f**k off at their leisure.

Looks like I'm kinda stuck unless it's a test drive at a dealership.

I've always let potential buyers test drive a car I'm selling so long as they've had proof of being insured third party. Wouldn't buy a car without test driving but that's just personal opinion of course (at this rate I will have to!!).
