i got a loud noise coming from the drivers side wheel i took it to a garage and the mechanic without evening looking at it said its the cv joint common fault how much am i looking at this repair ?

iirc the kit is about £50 per joint, i maybe wrong, and then u got gearbox oil (as whole shaft has to come out). Then possible 3 hours labour @ £30 for the cheapest £80+/hr for stealers

took it to another garage today and found out that the cv boot had come off so there was no grease in the joint, thing is its a new cv boot that i had replaced about six months ago from another garage

Yeah they do split easily, another common fault.
Fixed one of mine (for the second time now) with a cheap stretchy universal boot, it's not the proper one but has been on a year and will see how it lasts.
When we realised we had to completly remove the shaft and split it to bits just to do the boot we opted for the cheap one to pass the mot.
It's much stretchier so may last longer, will see, only time will telll i suppose.

Assuming its a front outer joint (the most common to split it's boot & fail) the driveshaft does not have to be removed. The joint can be pulled off & replaced with the shaft in situ. I did mine in september for a total cost of £39.45 (£31.14 for the joint kit from Euro car parts - includes everything you need but the clamp bands really need a special tool so I used large Tyraps - & I chose not to use the axle bolt supplied with the kit & bought a new genuine bolt from the Audi stealer which was £8.31). If you're going to tackle the job yourself, try this article http://audi.kris-hansen.com/cvboot.htm . You will also ned a pretty reasonable tool kit. If you're going to get the job done by a garage I suggest you buy the part yourself & ask a good Audi independant to fit it. I'd agree with Evo at three hours labour but that should be maximum. Maybe worth going back to the original garage that did the boot & see what they might do about it.

well found out today i had the cv boot replaced on 19/11/07 so im not gunna be able to take it back to the original garage and complain 
looking at the link you provided it would seem i need a bearing puller which i aint got
things just go from bad to worse!!!!

hi mate you dont need a puller at all ! takes 25 minutes piece of **** job just take your time and be prepared to get very mucky !!

lol mate i'm a time served nissan / fiat mechanic (many moons ago right enough ! )
and the longest part of the job is jacking up /securing and removing the roadwheel !!
honestly its a doddle ! air tools do help though !!

they seem to use zip ties for some reason ****** rubbish however i got it sorted in the end i got a local mechanic to do it for £30
Discovered a while ago that the CV boot clips are available separately from the Stealers (just over two quid for the large one) so I swapped my cable ties out.
