My cars still has a really nasty knocking

i've replace 3 CV joints now but still I'm getting a really bad knocking from the front end, its a rotaional knock/grind. the only thing i can think of now is its the gearbox. but it happens weather in or out of gear clutch in or out, does the quattro gearbox have like a transfer box that could of had it or developed play in it?
I'm really stumped and 3 CV joints and few hundred quid worse off and now I'm broke!
Its going into my local garage (non dealer) tomorrow but that'll cost an arm and a leg.
 
Tierod & versinity are a place to look aswell as the bushes in those areas do wear & also as Sarah says the ARB bushes do wear aswell.

Reading your comments, its not a wheel bearing then given its rotational, does it get any worse when revving engine, just thinking of my experiences thats all.
 
Ah hold on mate, you have 4wd, are you 100% positive its the front as I had a similar issue & it was the bearing housing in one of the rear shafts, they have a kinda housing for the bearings that got broke when track control arm broke, that made a horrible grinding/knocking noise when it went, just an idea, stupid garage didnt even see that broken part when replacing the track arm, only when got down road I noticed noise, still drove ok, thats why its always good to test your work thoroughly huh, lol, unfortunately my old employees didnt listen, they always forgot that part of the job, so I sent them 300 miles back to site to fix a fault they created, lol, idiots, glad I dont employ anymore.

Anyway its hidden nicely behind the driveshaft connecting onto the front to rear drive box thingymegig, lol.

Do they have these also on the front?
 
Not sure if anyone can help me.. I didn't want to create a new thread as I've got a few on the go already..

But along the lines of 'Knocking', I heard a bit of a 'rattle'/knocking yesterday, and it seems to be getting worse. It's coming from the front, and it's evident when you're under the bonnet too. It sounds as though its really close to the rad on the left hand side. I can't seem to ID it and it's really quite worrying. It's a rattle/tapping noise..

I don't suppose anyone can shed some light for me?
 
Ticking, yes. Ticking sound's about right. Erm, next question..

What is, where is, how do I fix, locate the Charcoal filter?!
 
So I've done my research (the SEARCH function is a wonderful thing..) and it sounds as though it's nothing to worry about (if it indeed were to be the charcoal filter making the noise)

Strange though, only just really started to notice it. heh
 
The knocking noise has got worse - it doesn't sound healthy. Sounds really bad when cold/low revs - I was told it wasn't the charcoal filter - any more ideas?!
 
is there a squeaking, because that could indicate the ARB bushes...
 
Not so much a squeak, no. My step-Dad said it sounded like a tractor yesterday morning as I left the house early doors... (can only hear it when cold.)

It's 'tinny' and rattles very much so. Doesn't sound healthy. A loud tapping/knocking, that's the only way I can describe it really. I might run it into my local garage at lunch if time allows.
 
just thinking about your problem...

is it there when the engine has just been turned off - might be the oil pump

does it change when you rev the engine ?

does it go away / get better when the engine is warm ?


can you be a bit more specific about the noise, conditions when you hear it and try to think of all the features the make it worse / better... (most problems can be identified if you get specific info)

Chris, thanks for your interest here in helping me..

I will try video the noise later this evening when the car has been sat for an hour or two..

It does sound as though it's upfront, in the 'bay. It starts the second the engine strikes and finishes half second after the engine is turned off (if still cold), you can hear it knocking and then it stops.

Upon revs, it dissapears slightly - however when the revs drop you can hear it again. With the bonnet up, the ticking seems to be coming from the front left handside. It was put down to the Charcoal Filter but this apparently is now out the question (accoding to Corey at Quattronics)

When the engine is warm yes, the knocking gets better.

An oil pump, looking at a good couple of hundred quid there arnt we? Why would this cause a knocking noise? My oil is in a bad way at the minute. Lots of carbon deposits in the breather pipes were found, so god only knows what the internals are like.
 
I was able to capture a video this morning of the offending noise..



I'm unable to listen to it, i have no sound this end (And am not allowed it either!). Can you take a listen and see what you think??

I had a friend take a listen last night after gym; I need to get it to a garage asap. (That's todays lunchtime job!)
 
sounds like something heavy and metallic knocking... you sure the exhaust / manifold hasnt split, cracked or come loose?

sounds too loud to be anything delicate inside the engine - could be wrong though, so take it easy.

if it was my car i wouldnt drive it untill i knew it wasnt something that was about to kill the engine.

it does sound like the exhaust as it doesnt seem to related to the engine revs that much...

let us know what it is when you find out.

Thanks all for the support. The garage I am taking it to is literally just around the corner, I will be there from 12:30 onwards, fingers crossed they'll be able to source the issue and will have it booked in sooner, rather than later!!

I'm not sure if it's the exhaust, can't be too sure. I've stuck my head under once or twice but haven't felt any blowing or similar.. could be the manifold &/or area though... :(

I'd say it's definately rotational, when you turn the engine off you can hear it stop with the engine speed....if you get my meaning.....
somewhere in the vacinty of your cam belt, water pump is a good option i reckon !! the case on the side of your engine isn't loose or catching is it ??
 
Having just returned from Northern Road Engineering here in Newark, I've got the vehicle booked in for Thursday mornign for closer inspection. Although the noise wasn't as obvious when I was there (due t the engine warming) he was still able to hear the noise from the starting/stopping of the engine.

He reckoned it could be something to do with the flywheel or similar(!?!?), certainly mentioned the cambelt and the tentioners, but its in on thursday to go up on the ramps for a better inspection.

a flywheel sounds expensive!!? then again, it could just be a case of tightening something or similar

Can I just ask didn't you buy this car from a dealer? Surely they must have chucked in some sort of warranty with it?

Well remember Jimbo. Yes, yes it has. I called through before taking it to the garage to double check what warrenty it has, and it should, be covered...
 
So my car was taking into the garage first thing this morning.. after a bit of a fiddle they thought it could be the cat, but upon further investigation, it looks as though its something to do with the cambelts..

which, struck me. As my cambelt was last changed at 69k, it's now on 94k, so I wouldn't of thought it would need a change until 120k?! I guess it all depends WHAT was changed at the time of service.. the tensioners etc, I'm not really up to scratch with the mechanical side of things, but needless to say I am gutted.

I'm glad I got it away in the garage before anything happened.. I should have put it away a good week ago!! (I'm a fool, but, a lucky fool at that.)

It's been left that they 'need to get their hands dirty' to do more investigating. I'm 'carless' for the weekend, will have to cancel a job of mine, but at the end of the day, it shouldn't be driven right now anyway, so it's in for the duration until shes fixed.

Just thought I'd leave a bit of an update.. Thanks to all those that have helped

I've traded the garage my S3 for their Feista Style *smiley with shades on!*

Yes it has no power. Yes it doesn't handle. But hell it's a smooth drive :)

The longer I drive this, the more exhilerating the S will feel when we switch keys again. :)!
 
I've just had a phonecall from the garage, "do you want the car back Mr White"?, " ORLY?>""!!

It's sorted!(?) Turns out, it was three bolts on the Bottem Cambelt Pulley that had worked their way loose. (you listen to the video again, it's quite bad, isn't it!?) Just imagine if these were to come out completely, it would have been a right mess..

I now need to approach the garage I brought it from to see if they're willing to cover the costs (seeing as though it isn't a warranty job..). You don't expect to buy a car and a month down the line be hours away from having the cambelt snapped!

Ohh, I was quite looking forward to running the Fiesta all weekend! :D
 
Glad you got it sorted, I'd be pressing the garage you bought it from to cover the costs.
