Why can't I buy just a rocker cover gasket for a 2001 A3 1.9 TDI without buying a new rocker cover too, for £95?

That's a gasket for a PD head, the OP has a ASV engine which is not a PD and uses a different (smaller) gasket.
It is true that Audi / TPS will no longer sell the gasket on its own, only with the rocker cover. I have no idea why, but the part number comes up as discontinued.
Elring & Victor Reinz also no longer list a rocker cover gasket for your engine code, so you are unlikely to have any luck with the motor factors.
Perhaps there has been a revised or upgraded part that requires the cover to also be replaced.
The gasket is listed as reusable though, is yours damaged?

I don't know the condition of my gasket as I haven't removed the rocker cover yet. I have an injector to change, which requires the removal of the rocker cover and will only find out the condition of the gasket once the job is started.
I'm on disability benefit and really struggle to get by. My Audi was a £500 car. This £95 gasket/rocker cover is a fizzin disaster are for me. I was expecting to pay a fiver for a replacement.
Has anyone got any other suggestions that may be able to help me out? Appreciated, sincerely.

As the gasket is listed as re-usable, if it isn't leaking now there is a good chance it will be ok.
The rocker cover is easy to remove. In your position I would clean the mating surfaces well, visually inspect and clean the gasket up and hope for the best.
I haven't worked on many of your engines, but on the PD diesels I always re-use the gaskets and have never had a problem.
Thanks Jim, I thought I was going to have to break the car and sell the wheels & leather to get my £500 back! Hopefully your solution will work out.
