Hi everyone I am looking for a lil advice if anybody can help? Right here goes...I have a 1999 S3 8L pre facelift,my problem is driving me nuts :s I have retrofitted a Audi RNS-E to bring the dash up to date went smooth as with no problems all works brilliantly the plan was to fit the facelift climate control unit, I have the 2 screen model and wanted the newer facelift version as it matches the colour of sat nav and I can put heated rear window and heated seats controls there and fit 2 cup-holders up top. Well I plugged it all in and it don't work the screen doesn't light up in fact nothing does, so turned headlights on to see if it lit up, it didn't the blower motor started turning? This leads me to belive some of the wire pins need swapping but I cannot find which ones. If anyone can offer any advice I will be eternally grateful many thanks

i was in exactly the same boat as you a few weeks back, tried logging every wire on my car and my mates facelift s3, nothing seemed to match up. What i did notice is that from left to right, plug 2 is not used on the facelift consol, which makes me believe that its a complete rewire job.
i got fed up after a few weeks and just decided to trim and modify the facelift panel and fibreglassed the prefacelift panel into it. Both come apart quite easy. I fitted it a few days back and looks very oem and should hopefully cause some confusion come show season :D

thanks for the info mate, would be interesting to see your result any chance of a pic or 2? looks like I will be on a similar job soon. Cheers

YES!!!! Sorted it now working as I wanted it :) :) :) right hopefully this will help other people out there its easy the climate control unit you need is 8D0 820 043M HELLA any more info need just ask ;)

Sorry for the bump

Did you have trouble with the unit not working due to just wiring? What unit did you try first and have you got any pics? In struggling at the minute as the units I have are 8L0 ones...

That's interesting... I want to do this, but haven't, due to reading that it's not easily possible. So how I am reading this, is that we need the unit from the B5 A4. Is that right, or is there still a need to modify the wiring?

sorry for the delay in getting back, the only wiring I had to do was extend heated seat wires a little, and the rear window de-mister wires. sorry don't have any pics at min howevr I had 2 8LO units which would not work for trying :( they do come in handy tho (il get to that lol) you definatly need the B5 A4 unit 8D0 820 043M and this unit the 4 wiring blocks plug straight in and BOOM works perfect :D now for the 8LO unit.... you will need to carefully undo this and the 8D0 820 043M unit and swap the internals over as the 8DO wont look nice at all in the dash good news is they are a straight fit just be careful with the screws. Hope this helps

I managed to get my hands on an A4 B5 unit (8DO) it does plug and play just swap the fascia over and rewire the rear demister in as you have said greasyaxl. Problem that I have now is that when I use the AC I can hear the pump constantly turning on and off. Plugged the old unit back in and it was fine so that eliminates the pump being faulty and suggests it's the hvac. Scanned it in and got these faults. Cleared and still came back.

Hey, sorry for the delay getting back to you. I don't seem to have had this problem myself but il get vagcom on it and check for any codes, i have noticed a psssst sound when turning the hvac on but all seems to work ok so not really gave that too much thought tbh I did however reset the vents after I fitted it through vagcom but don't think that will have any affect on what your describing. I can only offer my sincere apologies and will help you all that I can to solve this issue. Have you had any progress in this last week?

Thanks, I have decided before I start fiddling around with the wires and plugs is that I will get my hands on another hvac unit just to check incase my one is faulty. Hope to get one this week so will update once I get it

Gangsta! This should work nicely!

If anyone would read my thread then you would know That I've done it long time ago.

A4 B5 facelift climate control works and this is the best and easiest choice to swap. However you can still put full a3 facelift control panel but full rewire need to be done as its got signal from CANBUS.

I bet that GREASYAXL has not done it properly and have exactly same problem what JAY has.

So what you have to do is:
On back of the panel you have connectors A - B - C - D

Also you have small motor blower behind the dash with two wires.

1.One of them is in BLACK/RED colour. (some cars may have BLACK colour) Connect it to pin 6 i socket A.
2.Then connect together PIN c3 and C14. Do it same with pins D14 and D15
3.After that rewire pin A10 onto B6
4.Once you done it switch VAG-COM and erase all faulty codes.
5.Change coding for 03140
6. After all that you will have only one fault code 01296 but is not giving you any issue for proper A/C work whatsoever.

Thanks Danio, just read your thread and well done on taking that whole dash apart just for Air Con!!!

Sorry for asking this, but I just wanted to make sure im doing it right as im a complete amateur with any sort of wiring:

1. I have read about pin 6 before, some cars have this pin free. Do I taper the black / red wire in as I already have a wire there [not sure what it is though]
2. Again taper a wire between C3 and C14 so they are linked? same with D14 & D15??
3. "Re-wire" take the wire from A10 completely out of the pin and join onto the B6 wire? Or do I leave A10 as it is and taper another wire?

Didn't bother with changing the code. Mine was set at 00041

Does anyone have pictures in what wires need splicing? Also can the a4 unit just be used without the messing of wires?

Hey Danio I am doing this conversion from s3 8l prefacelift to Audi a4 b5 to fit in a s3 8l facelift console.

I have seen a guide that looks exactly like mine and the only change in wires they do is add a cable running from the rear defrost blue/white cable to socket A pin6 for the illumination. Also replace the rear defrost cables and connect them to the two pins on the new climate controls socket F.

Could you explain if these changes were made on an Audi a4 b5 climate controls or if it was something else?

Thanks Danio, just read your thread and well done on taking that whole dash apart just for Air Con!!!

Hey there Jay I wanted to see if you did the rewire for your climate control from the prefacelift s3 8l to the A4 b5? I saw you asked some questions and I myself have the same questions and wanted to see if you did it and had success before I did something randomly.

Hey guys,
I found this topic couple of months ago and i got some courage for the facelift console upgrade as you said.
1. Got the A4's "8D0 820 043M" and it worked great until i pressed ECON to turn my AC and it started turning on and off like crazy :)
2. Followed exactly what Danio said but there was a difference (my cable was Black/Blue).
What I actualy did was as Danio said:
1 - took out the "Black/Blue" cable from the little fan that was installed on my pre-face console and connected it together with pin 6 from socket A
2 - connected together pin C3 with pin C14 and then connected pin D14 with D15.
3 - took out the pin from A10 and placed it to B6 socket.
4 - fired up the car and pressed ECON without clearing any codes and the AC was working as it should. Didn't clear any codes for now because I ran upstairs to tell you guys that everything Danio said worked like a charm on my Audi A3 1999 TDI. I believe the cables we are swapping are from the same source as they were the exact same color on my A3 (except for the D15 which was brown and I believe its some kind of ground or something).
Wish you good luck and I want to specially thank to Danio! :) :) :)

Hello everyone!! I have just completed the swap. The reason for doing this conversionwas in order to properly fit a 2DIN (Double Din) unit in my dash. I went to a car electrician in order to do the wiring for me. However, I gave him the info from this thread in order to complete the job fast and not rewire the whole aircon unit.
NOTE: If anyone out there is reading this thread with the intetion to do this in order to fit an aftermarket unit, please note the following:
  1. Source a facelift center console (bolt straight on to the old mounting points)
  2. Make sure that the cage is 2DIN (if not then cutting is required) (swapping cages is straight process no special skills required)
  3. Source the ESP button and its PLUG as the pre-fl plug is different (rewiring is an easy task for a skilled electrician)
  4. Source the HAZARD switch (the red triangle of the fl switch is smaller than the pre-fl, plug is the same no rewiring required)
  5. Source an A4 aircon unit (8D0820043M), and swap the facia with an S3 unit (approximately 10 torx screws need to be unbolted/bolted, 5-6 for facia and the rest for de-attaching the facia from the display PCB)
  6. Trimming for the facia might be required is the S3 aircon facia is not from a 2DIN console
  7. Rewire the aircon as per Danio's post and re-program via VAG-COM
  8. If you opt for an aftermarket radio unit make sure you buy a facia as well (a universal facia A4 B5 is a good choice but requires some cutting here and there)

Good luck everyone, and many thanks to the people above for sharing all this valuable info!!!
If you require more information please feel free to contact me.

Thanks,
John
