Did I do the right thing ??

I have recently replaced my A4 1.8T 143 54 plate ( 267,000 miles ) with a new A4 2.0 TDi Quattro 177

I have had the new car for 7 weeks ish and it has taken me some time to get used to the complete difference in drive and the 6 speed box as I have never had a TDi before, only ever had petrol cars in the past.

so should I have stuck with petrol or is a modern TDi a good choice or did the sales guy really do a number on me ?? am I going to be looking at a TFSi sometime soon ??

I think you've done the right thing, but at the end of the day you are the only person that can ultimately say whether you have made the right choice!

Did you put 267k miles on the 1.8T? Surely buying the replacement meant you would have had a test drive first before putting your deposit down? Anyways, having driven a Passat 1.9tdi for the last 10 years, you will be thankful of the fuel economy, think 600+ miles between fills. It can't be that hard to adapt to diesel power, the torque makes then easy to drive daily, they just don't like to be revved to the redline, motorway driving especially, is a more relaxed affair also with derv power delivery also.

Yes I do like it .... I had a test drive in a few 143's not in 177 as that was a last minute thing...

Hi I put 260k on the 1.8T as it was used when I got it, I only test drove the 143 Tdi as that is what I was looking for but I wanted a Black Edition quattro with sat nav and they didn't have one anywhere until the end of January and I just didn't want to wait so went for the 177. I am getting much better mpg than the 1.8T but as you have pointed out they do drive differently and that you just don't pick up from a 10 mile test drive.....

A fill up in this car is less than the 1.8T in cost and amount and I'm getting around 200 more miles to a tank, however I am driving the new car smother and not as hard as I did the 1.8T ATM

With the mileage you cover, I can understand the switch to diesel power, I did the very same thing 12 years ago going from a petrol to a diesel Passat, and never looked back. Your replacement car sounds like a very nice car, Black Edition tdi quattro 177, I'd happily roll in that if you don't want it!

Thanks for the reply jojo...... don't get me wrong here the car is fantastic in every way it has just taken me longer than I was expecting to get used to how a Tdi drives plus going form a 5 speed box to a 6 has made it interesting and although im a bit embarrassed to admit it I did start to run with the gear change indicator in the central lcd just to tell me how to drive it ......

I asked myself the same thing after selling my 02 Plate Audi A4 1.9TDI and getting the A3 3.2.I love the power and noise from the A3 and it is a very comfortable drive but the A4 just had something about it even though it was loud engined and slow.Suppose its just getting used to my new surroundings

Ahh, the eco gearchange display! The Golf Bluemotion I borrowed had this function, telling you when to shift up, it's a bit of fun driving it in this eco style, great for economy, but pants for any thing you consider calling performance. I just ignored it in the end, and drove normally, 10x better, and it was still doing 45 mpg instead of 55.

Hi jojo, That's the one ..... I am now off the driving trainer ...... And have just completed my 8th full tank and Fuelly has me up to 47.5 mpg for the fill so I am more than happy with that for now.
