Tyre burst on motorway.

Hi guys,

had the front passenger side tyre blow out today on the m54 while travelling at 'motorway speeds'. The tyres are only 3 months old, Pirelli Pz rosso 235 40 18's. Having taken it off I found the tread had peeled away from the sidewall around half of the tyre diameter, is this likely to be wheel alignment or a duff tyre ?

also had the fun of discovering the audi/vw space saver that audi flogged me won't fit over the brakes. Happy times!

Sounds like a tyre issue to me, for it to wear down a tyre in 3 months to the level that it splits you'd notice a fault when driving like car pulling etc, not sure from your description but could be one of a few issues, either just a tyre production fault, possibly but doubt it a well overinflated tyre or finally you've just driven over something and its split the tyre as you say!
ive never had any faults with pirellis myself but did you buy them from a reputable tyre shop as I've heard stories of dodgy tyre shops selling those bad copied tyres from other countries that give crap grip!

I'd be taking it back to the tyre place you bought it from. I'm sure Pirelli would be interested to investigate. There should be 8mm of tread on a nearly new tyre, so something serious is going on for it to part company with the rest of the tyre at speed after only 3 months.

Is tracking spot on? What about the driver's side - any indication it's going the same way?

Haven't got a photo, bought all four from one of the big uk tyre fitters.

took it back this morning with the receipt and they gave me a spare steely that fits so I can give my brother his spare back.

Also they are going to pay for all of the alloys to be refurbed as the one that blew got damaged and I said if I only have 1 wheel done they won't match. And replace all 4 tyres with conti's as I said I don't want pirellis on my car again.

Luckily the receipt had the name of the guy who worked on the car, who turned out to be an apprentice who had only been there 2 weeks and was left working on the car alone, so they have put it down to it not being fitted properly because when they checked the other three wheels tyre pressure was spot on and tracking was perfect... Happy days

P.s. They have said I can choose where I get the wheels done, get a quote, give it them and they will pay before the work is done and I give them a copy of the receipt they are expecting a quote between £4-500, is this about right? Also, any recommendations for places in midlands area?

I have these Pirellis on my 2.5tdiQ and would be interested if anyone kn ows how bad fitting would lead to this.Seems negligent to leave the job to an unsupervised new trainee and lets hope that's not usual for any tyre fitters big or small

They think it would have been caused by the wheel not being fitted square to the hub....

Got to say though it never felt strange driving it.. The tyres were probably the best I've ever had on a car. Until it went bang that it, obviously I wasn't gonna tell them that though

just think yourself lucky they are refiting all 4 and a full refurb
if it wasnt square to the hub you would have been back after a mile or 2 you would notice

The only reason I've pushed the issue with them is because I was only inches from being under the front of a 44 tonner when it blew, and when the spare didn't fit that was the cherry on the cake. I had to vent it on somebody

you did right
makes me think that they have had a problem or 2 in the past with this trye
as there giveing alot away for a simple blowout that could have been caused by prety much anything on the motorway
and it is scary stareing under a hgv.
even more scary when we have blowouts on hgvs scary as ****

Unless whilst fitting he caught the inner lip and with heat the tyres opened up.
