Does anyone know what type of Relay for RS4 Start button retrofit???

I was browsing eBay a while ago when my finder suddentlly got a twitch and I ended up with a brand new RS4 Cabby Start button... Now I've finally decided to make it work actually so I started looking around to find out how to wire it all up and I've found the following write up which seems very useful (once translated from German. However I would like a bit of help from those of you who understand a thing or two about car electrics and tell me what type of relay I need to get to make it work exactly as on the diagram below...

Looks like a normal 5 pin switching (I think that's right) relay from any car or motor factors.

Just need to make sure the crating is high enough.

But I do kind of agree with the posts on AudiSRS, at the end of the day the key is still in the ignition so may as well just turn it.

It's funny how things turn around. As a kid, the very first car I have any recollection of was a late 1950s Morris, which had a separate starter button from the ignition key. I can remember my dad being really impressed (bordering on excited) when he changed it for a 1964 Vauxhall Victor and discoved the new car had a combined ignition and starter key. This was real progress and evidence he had bought a truly modern car.

I fitted a starter button in my BMW and thought it was amazing.
There is something about pressing a better to start a car over turning the key. I disabled the ability to the turn the key to start it, which seemed like a good anti theft idea at the time but the amount of phone calls I had from garages that worked on the car phoning me wondering how to start or assuming it was broken got annoying. Granted it was not very obvious.

Thanks ScottB5! I was worried this thread might turn into a discussion about how pointless/useful this retrofit is... To me, it's a nice thing to have regardless the fact you still need to insert the key (even many today's cars with a start button from factory require to insert the key prior pressing the button anyway), but I appreciate that to others this might seem like a completely pointless thing to have. Interestingly lots of people find stuff like fake 'carbon look' vinyl wrapping a great (or at worst an acceptable) mod, but retrofitting an OEM Start button seems for some reason to attract lots of criticism...?? Go figure! (Now I'm mostly talking about other threads of the similar nature I've come across when looking for info on this.... So no offence meant to anyne here!)

I would still greatly appreciate some constructive advice on the type of relay I need. Ideally a specific model that I could just order online and get on with the install... Thanks

Maiky, This relay.
PR03 Relay 12V 2 x 15amp Twin Output | eBay

12v, twin input 1 output.

Pop in to Audi to get a relay holder and repair cables. It should then fit in to the correct relay holder/board.


If you want to get really creative, you can make it the ignition barrel really redundant with a magnet and reed switch (very basic thinking) but I've still not fully worked out the steering lock. No idea if you can retro fit a electric one from a newer model.

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but would there be any advantage in going with the AUDI's repair cables rather than just using some good quality (eg. Speaker) cables?

Audi will have the correct plugs on the ends to go in to the relay holder, it will be the correct size for the rating required and its a funky yellow colour.

Plus if you wanted to be really fussy you got a selection of different ends, gold or silver.

That makes sense! I will order the relay today and pay a visit to the local dealer tomorrow so hopefully should have everything ready to make it work by the next weekend...

Please don't use speaker cable, crimp clamps, chocolate blocks or any other form of cheap items. Properly solder the cables, heat shrink or insulation tape the cables after.
You might do it all proper and not use the cheaper options but just wanted to make sure and not assume you will. :thumbsup:

I did a similar thing but more 'stealthy' used a B6 flip up lighter console unit, a Richbrook ally butoon and a 5pin 12v 30A relay from halfords and to touch on ScottB5's comment, used heat shrink, oem tape and solder to ensure all is safe and look proper. I also CUT the starter live from the key barrel so it can ONLY start from the button. I the wired up a USB charger to the ignition ON supply that went to the wires from the old cigarette lighter (removed).

It certainly catches people out! but makes me feel like James Bond so I don't care! haha

Also if I just tell the AUDI guy what I need it for, will he know exactly what repair cables (eg. the repair cables are a fixed length I think, all the ones I bought have been and had two connections at either end. you have to make the length to what you want with your own cable.
Go in and explain to parts what you are doing and they should be able to work it out.
It might even be worth asking them about the relay but not sure on the price difference.

Just returned from dealer today and unfortunately didn't have much luck there I'm afraid. Perhaps the guy in the parts department just didn't have his useful hat on, but I clearly explained to him what I'm attempting to do, even gave him the part no. of the RS4 Start Button, said that I need the relay holder, relay and appropriate repair wires to make it work, but the guy just kept saying that I need to give him either a registration number or VIN of the RS4 for which I need these parts, and that he would not be able to tell me what I need for this retrofit as AUDI never intended this for mod a standard A4... After half an hour trying to change his mind, I started to feel like every additional minute of talking to him was a complete waste of time, so I thanked him for his assistance and ******** off.

Would there be anyone on this forum who could help me identifying all the parts I need (with the relevant part numbers) so I could just give them the list and spare myself anymore frustration?

you cant buy the parts to do this mod
you need juat a elay and holder audi dont do it
its wired direct in the rs4 cant remove the loom
i used same as above but used oem wires from start button to cig lighter thats where power comes from
then good quality wires to relay and power ect.

They look VERY handy!

I'm sure you can order different length repair wires as there is a xenon retrofitting guide I've seen somewhere with a huge length of yellow cable. Unless he went out and bought the cable and DIY'd it.

I've just spent the last two hours browsing through the Russian version of the ETKA catalogue (as this is the only free version I could find without going the illegal way) Here's the link: VIN-online.ru (ETKA) - Audi

...Mainly I was looking for the OEM connector which goes to the Start-Stop button. I believe that it must be one of the connectors for the following two diagrams, but still not sure which one... If someone could help here it would be great!

I suspect that the relay holder that I might use is the item 5 (443 937 527) from the second diagram...

Also does anyone has a good knowledge of the AUDI repair wires? The German manual gives all the colour schemes/sizes I need, but I'm having a hard time matching those with the OEM repair wires I can find on places like eBay (there's lots) as they all go by the part number without giving you the size(thickness) information..

although I don't have a great knowledge of car electrics, I'm fairly handy with my soldering irons (long story so I'll just stick to the good old fashioned solder and heat shrink sleeves here...

maikysupra, Audi repair cables are yellow, they don't have any colours to them.

Do you know if you guys run the same relay holders as the B5s?
I'd got a box full of them at home and a hand full of relays (I should have thought of this sooner, sorry).
Would you like me to go through it and dig out the correct relay holder and relay?
That's if I got one and if I have it will have an inch or two of cables, so all you got to do is attached your own length of cable to it and you're away pretty much.

That would be awesome! Not sure if the B5 holders are the same as B7 but I'm so desperate to make it work ASAP that I would give it a try.

With re to the cables, my understanding is that the ones from the ignition barrel to relay should be thicker 2.5mm while the rest is the standard 0.35mm ones... Do you say that you also might have these? Don't worry if don't as there seem to be lots on eBay...

It would be great if you could have a look and PM me know how much you would want for the lot!
