It's chain driven timing it should last the life of engine but the sometimes rattle like mad due to stretching
i have had a fault cyclonic oil separator (inside and part of the rocker cover) ,radiator replaced, software update for hesitancy and rough idle now I have a leaking transfer box seal a noisy clutch release bearing its kind of a money pit if you buy a bad one.

this link is quite good info http://sandbox.enjoybeing.net/veedub/vw_vr6_self_study.pdf

Thanks for the info mate! thought it was the chain. car seems to be running spot on. Had a book full of audi receipts for camshaft cv joints tyres and general full audi service history car is in good condition to for the year so its defo been looked after. just wondered if theres anyway of making the exhaust note slightly louder without having to change exhaust i know on a r32 there is a flapper mod just wondered if anyone knew about this mod on the a3! other then that a beautiful car only owned it for 1 day loving it tho!

You can do the flapper mod on you v6. It's just a case of pulling the L shaped pin out of the flap turn it 90degs so with it still working it doesn't interfere with the flap. Now with that done open the flap and secure with wire of some sort as anything else will melt. And if you do it this way the car will not throw up a warning light as the valve is still working. Also if you search you will find lots of threads about it.

L shaped pin out now turn and secure flap in position.

Hope this helps you out a wee bit.

thanks for the info mate! much appreciated think i will get my mate to have a look at it for me rather then atttemp that myself as im just rubbish with anything mechanical lool ! any other things to look out for on this car i see u have the same one ..seem solid and reliable!

It's a 10 min job and you only need a pair of pliers to tighten the wire and a pair of snips to cut the wire ends once its tight and if you don't get it then just turn the L pin and put it back in to the flapper valve.

thanks for the advice il try give it a go on weekend lol. whats ur 3.2 like mate have u had anything done to it??

Mines standard but I happen to know mine is capable of 148mph on the autobahn's!

I tried the flapper mod on mine and it didn't hardly make any difference. Then after being upset and not wanting to drive my car any more cos it was to quiet I got a custom cat back system.

standard you tube videos but sounds a lot louder and awesome in person and i'm not driving as that gear change is stale haha

thanks for the info of pics and vids guys ! just a case of getting round to doing it now..however iv got one issue when my car is idle iv noticed a slight noise from the chain/v belt engine is running fine but there is sometimes like a chiming noise from there really dont know what that could be ?dont think its specifclly the chain or belt but i notice a slight noise from around that area.

on another note just wondered if anyone has had there a3s decatted? i know it wont pass mot but mines got 12 months on so just wondered if anyone knew if its expensive for a decat and fitting??

thanks for your help

ps heres a pic of my car A3

Is the noise from the drivers or passenger side as the chain is on the passenger side and your aux belt is on the drivers side could the noise be the a/c cycling on and off and the noise being the compressor clutch

hi mate the noise is from the drivers side. had another look on lunch just started her up and it sounds fine so i really dont know what it could be unless im just being parranoid. i do know the prev owner got the ac re gassed if that makes any difference?

If you want to decat you can fit the scorpion exhaust for the golf r32 mk5, this fits, the milltek manifold/downpipes etc probably fits as well. The scorpion joins on to the original manifold and connects back after the cats. With both you can get high flow cats or a decat. The scorpion exhaust can connect up to a milltek cat back exhaust.

sounds good!tbh id probally just want a decat as i think it would prbally work or cheaper rather then buying a catback. Any ideas of how much a decat cost?just the decat and fiting?i think thats all id want for bit more noise and a cheeky 1 2 horses..

Heres some more pics of my car!

Scorpion and milltek decats won't fit on the standard exhaust. The only other way to decat is going to an exhaust place and getting them to cut them out but the car will fail the mot. With a decat at some point the emission warning light will come on unless you get a remap. The light can also be turned off with some code readers.
