So I was searching for a replacement to my stock 16" 9-arm alloys (the ones with the thick arms and really small gaps that make cleaning the inside of the alloys a pain in the ****) with either

18" MOMO Quantum (Matt Anthracite) Alloy Wheels for Your Audi A3 All Models - Rimstyle.com

or

Dezent RF Dark (Anthracite with Polished Face) Alloy Wheels (Alloys) - Rimstyle.com

Both are 8j width and 18" size. The Quantums have an offset of 50, while the RFs have an offset of 45.

The Quantums have a more affordable price going for them, and a kind of techno-look to them (which I kind of like). However, they sit in further than the RFs (though I suppose this could be remedied by spacers?). The lower price would also mean I can afford to get better tyres with my budget

The RFs, I imagine, sit a little more flush with the arch at ET45 but cost a fair bit more, which means I'll have to skimp down to some Nankang AS-1s or something for tyres...

I mean, I know most of you guys understandably swear by the OEM rims, but some of the aftermarket brands can't be that bad, surely (Dezent, in particular, seem to have had good recommendations)?

So what're anyone else's thoughts on this?

I personally don't like either.

Not a fan of both those rims theres loads more better ones out there i wouldnt personally go for them but if i had to choose to save my life id go for momo's

NHN: Is that because you don't like the look of them, or you're a staunch advocate of OEMs?

mjr901: See, I actually came across the Dezents first before the MOMOs and, the more I think about it, the more the MOMOs actually don't look too bad (does help that they're a 1/3 cheaper than the Dezents!).

Admittedly, though, I've not had a chance to read up on the brand. Does anyone else know/heard any feedback for MOMOs?

Also, according to this: Audi guide for correct wheel fitment, PCD, and offset of your car | Alloy Wheel Fitment the lowest offset is 45 for the type of A3 I have (an 8P), can anyone verify whereabouts a set of 8j, 18" alloys on 225/40/R18 tyres would sit in relation to the arches?

Sorry for double post, but I've actually found a reference pic for the MOMOs:

Audi A3 II avec jantes MOMO QUANTUM 19"

Those are apparently 19s, but they don't look half-bad. Then again, I'm aware photoshop can do wonders, but that's the only pic I could find. I reckon, even without photoshop, the difference wouldn't be too much. Also, there can't be many that look worse than the ones I've got on now!

TDI140: Got any recommendations of your own? I'm open to suggestions =]

Those are pretty cool, actually. Though I am kind of wanting to go with a darker set of wheels that aren't solid black (my A3 is a solid black). I figure a gunmetal/anthracite set would be light enough to contrast, but dark enough to keep with the kind of look I'm wanting.

Also, I will never really understand why wheels with many, many thin spokes remain popular. Is it not a hassle cleaning all those little sticks?? =P

Yeah, I was looking through those earlier. Not sure the Turini's are to my taste, but thanks for the input =]

Although, I DO quite like these Speedline Corse Imperatore (Gloss Black with Polished Face) Alloy Wheels (Alloys) - Rimstyle.com. However, they are majorly out of my budget =[

I dunno, maybe my tastes are a little out of the ordinary for this scene, lol.

lol - Everyone likes different things, even circular cheese graters :p There are like, traditional wheels that people tend to go for round here tho.

Yeah. It does seem like most people who don't run OEMs for life tend to prefer ones that at least look like an OEM rim, or are otherwise loving the many-spokes racing style ones. And if you're not in any of those camps then you probably run 3SDMs, lol.

But, evidently, manufacturers cater to all tastes, no matter how bizarre: Ronal URS (Teddy Bear) (Silver) Alloy Wheels (Alloys) - Rimstyle.com

MOMO.

Though, on a different note, why wouldn't you buy used OEM's? They would roughly cost the same-ish!!

I'd go for the Momos over either of the Dezents but, like most, I'm more about OEM. I'd say the worst option would be a bad replica of an OEM wheel - those Dezent RGs look like a cross between RS4s and Speedlines... not a fan.

There are plenty of good aftermarket manufacturers, it's more about the style of the wheel than who made them really. Audi wheels, in general, suit Audis. Not all OEM are good, and not all good are OEM, but there's quite an overlap to choose from.

I'm also not a fan of either personally. Much nicer wheels out there for the money. Just my 2p worth.

Well, I did start off looking for used OEMs. I mean, they're official, and thus less hassle and all that. However, I had some trouble finding a set that were affordable and yet don't appear to have been mauled. So I went to look at aftermarkets because I got a bit bored of looking at the same 3-4 designs of alloy wheels, lol. Also, I guess, as a person I've always kind of had a slightly alternative sense of style. So I guess it's only natural that my car reflects that too.

MartayMcFly: Yeah, I have been careful to stay away from replicas. I know some people are ok with them, but I figure if I'm bothered enough to want to buy something that LOOK like OEMs, I might as well ACTUALLY buy OEMs, right? The only reason I asked about manufacturers was really just to see if the ones I wer looking at had any reputation of poor quality alloys (some manufacturers, like Wolfrace for example, don't appear to have had particularly stellar feedback from customers).

Thanks for the responses so far, btw, guys. I get that such a thing is very much a matter of taste but it's always good to get a wider sampling of opinions :icon_thumright:

Yeah, I've seen them, and I do like that style. However, I've heard a couple of particularly bad stories regarding Wolfrace alloys in general, and wouldn't feel overly comfortable with spending that amount of money for those wheels when I could get a better quality set for the same amount.

The Dezent RF Dark and the Wolfrace's above look like something you'd pick up in Halfords to put on your Corsa before hitting your local Macdonalds.

I've always found that to be an interesting comment. It's a line of criticism that gets bandied about so much. The comment gets levelled for so many undisclosed reasons that I always find it hard to work out what actually qualifies as "something you'd pick up at Halfords to stick on your Corsa etc.". 'cos, collating all the different instances that I have heard that line of criticism, it basically means all non-OEM alloys (even if the aftermarkets are similar to some OEM designs).

tl;dr - I don't find it particularly useful when people say that about alloys, because I don't actually know what it means =/

NHN: Is that because you don't like the look of them, or you're a staunch advocate of OEMs?

I don't like them & I don't run oem's on both of our 8P's, hope that clarifies I'm not a badge snob lmao.

Honestly you can buy much better looking aftermarkets tbh fella.

Ah. Admittedly I did make that assumption. Perhaps I got you confused with someone else on this forum with a similar name...

And, y'know, as a relatively new member to this forum and hobby, I'm pretty open to being educated. Got any specific examples of some better aftermarkets, pal?

Due to human nature/individuality etc etc, aftermarkets I like, you may not, example being posts so far :) so it doesnt really help you I guess, but our choice of wheels wasnt specifically for aesthetical reasons completely, we bought TD 1.2 Pro's for rreasons mainly because they're supposed to be hard as hell, unfortunately 2 wheels down has caused me to rethink this, but they look good on the theme of the car so we like them, but others may not.

While that is of course true, I generally ask out of curiosity for other people's tastes =] I quite like seeing what other people's opinions on styles are, and thinking about why that may be (it generally helps if they're able to explain their opinion too of course). I can see the appeal of some of the TD ones, though I don't know what the difference is between the 1.2 line and the 1.3? I quite like the TD Le Mans, but they're a little out of my price range, unfortunately.

Something I have started to think about is the weight of the alloy wheels. Should weight be an important consideration in choosing a wheel? There's not really a lot of information about the weights of an alloy when you're browsing, so I got to thinking how important it actually was?
