Hi All,

I have recently got an Audi A4 1.8t, it's high mileage at 160k with FSH.

It has been driving fine no issues apart from an abnormally high handbrake which I presume just needs adjusting, well yesterday I was driving with the windows down and I noticed when driving between a row of parked cars a weird rattle noise kind of like ball bearings in a can, I think I was in third gear at the time.
I carried on driving then the car seemed to hesitate a bit then out my rear mirror all I could see was a massive cloud of smoke that was big enough to rival Del Boys van.

I immediately pulled over at this point smoke still streaming from the exhausts and let the car stand for a bit whilst I cursed repeatedly at it and anyone who beeped me.
I started it back up and it continued to smoke to start with then cleared up after a few minutes to the point where it wasn't smoking at all, reluctantly I had to drive on as I was on a main road but it seemed to drive fine almost like nothing had happened.
The smoke smelt kind of like what I'd imagine burning oil to smell like, not sweet like coolant and not a rich petrol smell.

I started it up this morning and as I expected after what I saw yesterday there was smoke, which although cleared within a minute still smelt horrible it was mostly white with a slight blue tint to it.

I have checked the water level which is fine and clear, the dipstick which is reading normal (although smoke did come out of this when I removed it.. is this normal?) there is no mayo like gunk to suggest head gasket.

I am thinking Turbo oil seals? I know it's a heavy car and the K03 isn't the biggest in the world but the turbo really doesn't do much at all as far as I can feel, I have driven a couple of turbos GT4, Surbaru's, TT and Cupras and when they have boosted you knew about it as it pushed you back in your seat, this one although you can feel it is boosting doesn't really feel that powerful certainly not enough to jolt you backwards but I suppose the fact it's only 160 odd bhp means its not meant to do that anyway?

I took a vid of me boosting it yesterday so you can hear the sound of the turbo as I know about the whole dentist drill = get your wallet out, this doesn't sound like that but there is a slight whine to it I think?
I shall upload the video in a bit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys and sorry for the essay.

Does the smoke have a blueish colour to it?

Could possibly be turbo related - check the inter-cooler pipework for excess oil.
Is it still boosting as normal? - Is the turbo making a different sound at all?

Hi both,

Yes the smoke has a slight blue tint to it.

It still boosts fine and drives fine when the engine has recently been started (I still let it warm up first obviously) but after like 30 mins it gets sluggish and I start hearing a rattling noise followed by smoke.
Turbo doesn't seem to be making any abnormal noises slight whistling sound maybe but no dentist drill sound I've heard on youtube vids.

Also I pulled the plugs today and a couple of them are oil fouled, if it was the turbo that was leaking surely that wouldn't foul the plugs?

P.S: I noticed today that the turbo seems to be soaked in oil!
