Question, as you look in the boot, the left hand side compartment, what's supposed to be there? All I have is a circular electrical connector flapping in the wind? CD changer or something?

Well I don't actually have one! The only thing that I find odd is I can't seem to see, via the stock Audi Concert head unit, where the option to select CD is?!? When I bought the car, everything as far as I could tell, looked standard and hadn't been tampered with, I recently changed the climate control unit as the original one had a corrupt LCD display, when I removed the trim and dismounted the radio it looked like it had been there from day dot?

You press Mode IIRC.

I know I must sound like a right biff, but I was there podging all the buttons, mode inc. and nothing happened whether that's because there wasn't a CD changer fitted, not sure?
I quite like the OEM look and to put an aftermarket unit in, although it would be more practical and from your opinion, reliable, it would look out of place.
What's wrong with the standard set up? I find for a 'middle of the road' spec car the sound quality is perfectly acceptable, by no means amazing, but good enough. I've read the head units are riddled with commons probs such as corrupt displays and volume button failing, mine has a dodgy screen, which I've sourced a new head unit to replace it with, cost £15 off eBay and £8 ish to get the code.
Would uprated door speakers not improve the overall sound quality? I know your kind of restricted by the output of the head unit but for a crisper sound?

If the changers not present the option vanishes from the mode list.
The headunits are riddled with faults like you say, they're also ancient and have no modern features.
The concert head unit does have pre-outs, and if you're determined to keep it, then i'd still go down the route of a sub amp and discreet amplifier for the door speakers. The output from the concert is woeful, and the stock speakers cant handle any bass, however once you give them a nice signal and feed the bass elsewhere, they sound pretty decent.
Paresh did that and was pleased with the results, although he had the later symphony unit, the same idea will work with your concert.
Theres no easy approach to changing the door speakers. The stock speakers are mounted oddly, the commonly available plastic adaptors are absolute garbage and a waste of time. If you want to change the speakers it essentially means mega effort making up your own mounts.
I fitted some nice speakers to my first avant, and they sounded worse than the stockers. On close inspection, i could see that the plastic adaptor was stopping the bigger speaker cone moving freely, hence it sounding rubbish. I ended up putting the stock ones back in and selling the speakers on.

I'm a little ignorant when it comes to car audio as it's never been an area which I see the point in ploughing money into, go faster stuff is the way forward
You mention fitting sub amp's & amplifiers, does that involve a lot of hacking and bashing to fit them?

my setup:
The subs in a custom fibreglass enclosure that i made so it doesnt use up lots of boot space. Amps are mounted to the rear of the seats, and the seats can still be folded down as normal so access isnt impeded.
