burning oil smell?

sorry if im bombarding you guys with questions new car so im in the process of fixing the niggly things.

Been smelling burnt oil lately. When i come to a stop at a light or park up i can smell the burnt oil. Nothing when im driving. Ive checked the oil level every week for the last 3 weeks and there has been no change. So if its burning oil its not coming from the oil pan which doesnt make sense to me. Any ideas out there?

i havent noticed any mate but tonight im going to leave a peice of cardboard or something underneath just incase.

ive heard the pcv system gets clogged after a while just wondering if it could be that, but i wouldnt know what im looking for' being honest

Yeah mine does the same occasionally. My guess is the rocker cover gasket weeps ever so slightly, not enough to leave puddles under the car though. On the drivers side corner of the head nearest the bulkhead a drip gathers periodically, I had the bonnet up the other day after I turned the engine off and was looking over the exhaust section as the drip fell and landed slap bang on the hot pipe giving off a great stench of burnt oil.

I had the undertray off a couple of weeks ago and while it was grubby, there was definitely no evidence of a prolonged oil leak. I might just nip the rocker cover bolts to the correct torque and see if that alleviates it, I suspect though it really needs a new gasket.

that be a breather pipe broken! is it a 1.8t , mine is ,its the elbow on the oil filter housing that goes brittle ,the smell your getting is crankcase fumes , changed mine on tue , inlet manifold off job

is a bit of a fiddle . i didnt take it fully off just manuevered it out the way , took 2 hours in all, you have to drain the coolant too as the top pipe need to be moved out of the way, i got the elbow on ebay £17 , you will prob need a dipstick tube too as mine shattered as it goes brittle , just like the breather pipe, watch the bits dont fall in the crankcase !

Update!!

Right situation is I haven't really got the time to try and sort it myself at the Minuite so I rang a local Motorsport garage the price seems steep to me? Anybody had a quote cheaper ?

We are aware of the problem with the Audi 1.8T engine where the oil pick-up
pipe becomes blocked with oil sludge.


The matter was actually subject to a 'Technical Bulletin' in the USA and is
now part of their service plan at 70,000 miles I believe.


Unfortunately this is a time consuming job and we would require the car for
a full day.


The air-con system will also need degassing as part of the process. (Not
included in the quote)


We would quote £300 + vat + parts (oil/filter/engine flush/aircon degass/regass, etc.)


Please let us know if you would like to book in for this work.

The sludge issue is a genuine one, but has no bearing on the oil smell in the cabin, that'll be a breather pipe/ elbow/ valve under the inlet manifold. If you know what's gone, you will be able to do it in place. However, if you can the sludge issue is not to be ignored, it's common and we see it on a daily basis on here

Right then, turned out my breather was sheared completely.

Just spent 2 hours picking the bits out of the hole on the oil filter assembly. Before I started removing the snapped off bit I stuffed some blue roll down the hole, this caught most of the fragments. Taped a smaller bore hose onto the hoover and plucked the last bits out.

Went to refit the new shiny elbow and low and behold the ****** thing doesn't fit! How on earth do you get the new elbow to fit into the oil filter body?! No amount of wiggling, cajoling, oiling and even swearing wouldn't get it to sit deep enough in the hole to engage the circlip to retain it.

The part I bought to replace is was a Febi Bilstein one, them seem to make shed loads of aftermarket parts to allegedly OEM spec and the volume of 1.8Ts out there I can't imagine anyone would get away with selling shoddy replacement parts and get away with it for long.

Any ideas? I thoroughly cleaned the bore out so there's no reason why it shouldn't simply slot into place. FWIW it is possible to change the pipe over without removing the manifold, bit of a pig though.

tell them to diagnose it correctly lol..... Have a good look over the breather system you'll oly have to touch the house to find the spit one they go all funny
