Hi, I'm looking at a 1999 s3 that's been fitted with a BAM engine, would it have dropped straight in? Originally it was a 210bhp but forgot to look at what code motor.
Basically I need some bottom end parts for it so trying to ascertain whether it's all from a BAM or could just the head have been fitted? Under the plastic engine cover on the o/s/f of the head it has BAM etched.
I dont want to buy parts for a BAM and find out bottom end is still original, or is it all the same anyway?
Cheers

Could just be the head, could be the whole engine, Bottom line is it don't really matter as they are all pretty much the same so parts from the orignal APY will fit the BAM and Vice Versa

Brilliant that's ideal cheers, is the bottom end the same on all the 1.8t variants or are there differences just not between Apy and bam? any easy way to tell if the bottom end is original or not? Ta

There is an engine number/code stamped on the block... its where the gearbox bolts to the block and opposite to where the inspection hole is for the flywheel... I'll try and get a pic up of a block later and post up...

As beach buggy has said, the 1.8t's are fairly std across the range main differences being the rods (19mm and 20mm pins) and the blocks between transverse and inline engines...

APY/AMK/BAM S3 engines are all 20mm pins and small port heads... AGU is 20mm pins and large port heads, AUM (and the TQS codes I can't remember off hand) are 19mm pins and small port heads (IIRC)

<tuffty/>

Not all 1.8t variants are the same, some have 19mm rods, most have 20mm some have small port heads, other large. Bam has VVT where as the APY didn't. On the S3's anyway the bottom end are nearly identical, yes there where some differences in the way the cranks where made, but for all intents and purposes they are the same. S3's only came in APY,AMK and BAM. TT's Have the APX, AUM and BAM and the A3's had AGU,AUM,AJQ and I think AUQ, other than the AUM which where the 19mm pin versions all other's where the same pretty much and certaibly can be swapped around. Other bit's like the AGU having higher compression do factor but really the majority of the parts are identical.

Cheers guys thats ideal, can buy some rods for it now knowing i will end up with the right ones, will confirm if its the BAM when i pull it out.
If it is, would other stuff have had to be changed to fit it?
Cheers

Hi, so it turns out its just a BAM head with the original APY block, is the VVT system part of the block on the BAM engine or is it within the cylinder head?
Cheers

But i can't see anything obvious and i can't see anything thats not connected? it was fitted by a previous owner and has been up and running, i'm just trying to work out whats what while its all apart.

Bam head with an apy tensioner by the look of it

sooooo, youve not said and no-ones actually asked........

whats wrong with it and why are you taking it apart?

I thought bam had 19mm pins?
EDIT- clarified from another thread that it has 20mm wrist pins.

It's out as bottom end sh*t itself. So the Vvt mechanism would normally be built into the cam chain tensioner? Or at least in that region? Not overly bothered either way if it's there or not I'm just trying to work out exactly what I have got to make getting parts easier and so If I sell I can give an educated description of what's in there rather than being sold it as having a full BAM engine like the person I bought it from was lead to believe!
Cheers
