So, some back ground. Ive had many hondas (1990 16v twin cam CRX 130bhp, 1991 vtec Crx 160bhp and 2000 VTi-s Mb6 Civic 170bhp), however cost of ownership plus mileage has forced me out of 23 mpg cars. On my third PDengine wagon now. Last two: gt tdi 115 2001, gt tdi 130 2003 (both 100k plus miles) and now a a3 se 130pd 03. The two golfs had power issues up the revs. A MAF sensor sorted one but the other was likely a VNT vane issue (i blew it on for a 200 buck loss and said nowt). Ive researched the symptoms and it all points to turbo issues. All common to miler engines.
Within a month of buying current a3 ( with a 3 month gear box and engine warranty from 2nd hand local dealer). So, yesterday morining actually, it goes in to limp mode. This resets with a stop and restart(just know from experience its the turbo). So, last night, i take it out for a good blast. Red zone all the way up the box and downshifting hard in to bends. Was good fun. Hadnt really given it complete dogs abuse since i got it. I slowed for a town and went to park. Clutched for reverse park and there was no resistence....clutch felt the same, gear shift was operating the control arms on top of gear box bell but no engagement.
Phoned the dealer and the car was collected that morning(good lad). At 3 that day the dealer calls(again, good lad). His mechanic reckons to have car proper right it needs refurb of the box and turbo (turbo is out of warranty). Gonna cost over a grand he reckons (in my ignorance this seems reasonable) and the dealer wants half to sort it all out. Gonna speak to the mechanic tmro and get details.
And so... to the question..... Was i screwed?. On monday i get my a3 se back. It should be good for major components for 60 or more thousand miles. Rockin a refurb turbo etc. I agreed to go 400 bucks towards sorting the lot, the car cost 3000 a month ago when i bought it(i traded a moody hi mile sdi golf with two in cash) . The A3 is met silver. Very, very clean and on RS6 18s with long MOT (and more expensive in Norn ireland). It pulled well but i could feel that hesitation and change in torque thats indicitive of silted up VNT vanes. I suppose time will tell but if i get a sorted PD back and considering these things may have been an issue after warranty ran out... and turbo was only at early stage of deterioration (reckon they could have given it back and done nowt, might have been months before it happened again) I will be happy, i do alot of miles (30 plus thousand a year) and love the high torque blast of PD and will remap when warranty is spent. Maybe im kidding myself but........................... Opinons, please, dont hold back. Please.
By the way this is my first post. Im not here to sell a pup or pick brains. I know what i need to do to fix my car from research and experience. Have seen loads of posts about the same issues (should really have its own section; cracked hoses, j valve, VNT vanes, MAF and other sensors, turbo itself: some kind of troubler shoot that iolates the possibilities in order). Again, dreaming.
