as an example what needs to be budgeted for and price?

what do you think is a fair price?

i'm thinking if i need to budget for say £x amount to maintain, should i look to put that amount in the price of car and look at lower mileage etc.

If the cars all you want in every other respect I wouldn't let that mileage put you off. Being late 2003, does it have the S-Line style bodykit?

The timing belt should be done every 80k, but most people prefer to do it every 60k so I'd budget £500 as a worst case for that and all ancillaries, although it won't cost you that much. Besides that there's not much beside the usual A4 issues to look out for without knowing the history of things like brakes and coolant. Springs and shocks if original 'may' be nearing the end of their useful life.

What sort of history does it have?

Thanks. It has the s line styling
Apparently it has full service history with recent cambelt, but don't think waterpump done.

I was thinking maybe clutch, flywheel, springs, shocks, bushes, mounts etc. But never had to do this so unsure on costs

Make sure you get the waterpump done ASAP.

That's the weakest part of the whole timing gear, don't know why it's not part of the timing kit, it's only recommended. It's only 55 quid and no extra labour costs when being done the same time

Suspension arms can be v.expensive, B6's have a multi link front suspension set up... £1500 in the last year... :banghead:

Rear anti roll bars can go as well (the collars disintegrate after time), £150 for a RS4 version....

A friend of mine has an A4 Avant 1.9 tdi with over 200,000 miles on clock and other than shocks and a clutch it hasn't caused any problems.
They are pretty solid cars.

****** hell you were robbed on both counts .

Paul...

Wasn't robbed, I have replaced every single suspension arm on the car, along with 2 track rod ends, 2 CV joints, 4 CV gaitors and had a full 4 wheel alignment done, all by a specialist, most of the expense was the cost of the parts, I know the guy very well as we worked at Audi together for 3 years and with the amount of business he gets from me and other people I've referred to him it's not in his interest, he regularly does little bits and pieces like coding in sat navs for free and I can cal him for tech advice anytime I want.....

The RS4 RARB cost also includes all the associated bolts/mounts/drop links etc.... the bar itself was only £59 + VAT from a dealer and I fitted it myself......
