Oil for 8L S3 on annual service...

Hi All,

Just need to know what oil to use on my S3 which is on an annual service? I have contacted my local Audi dealer but they never return my calls!
I have some oil from when it was a long life service (think it's 5-30) but last service I had it changed to annual.

Any recommendations (preferably from Halfords as I can get there today) would be appreciated.

Im running 5w40, as i seem to burn 5w30 and 0w30.

Audi recommends 5w30 for 12k service intervals, 6-8k service intervals using 5w40 or 10w40 is the way forward :)

The viscosity of 5w30 in my opinion doesn't offer the same protection as a 5w40 or 10w40. As it ages the second number (30) will get lower, hence the reason why it starts to burn more. When you buy oil your looking out for the oil what keeps it's grading for the longest amount of time.

Why 20w50? lol

5w30 can start burning sooner than 5w40 because it's thinner at it's full operating temp.

The first number is start up viscosity, the second is viscosity at full temp. 20w50 would be terrible on start up and too viscous at full temp on a standard 1.8t
 
I already have a bottle of 5w30 in the car, would be be ok just to top up with it? Or should I go and get some 5/10w40?

It'll only be a top up. The car will be back in for a service in a few months time but don't want to cause any damage by putting the wrong oil in.

I wouldnt bother with 5w-30 edge i have that exact stuff in my car at the moment and its buring a fair bit going to use quantum 5w-40 from audi this time also thinking of doing the pickup pipe.

Mine drinks 5w30, im about to switch to 5w40 :).
 
Is it good put a long life oil in cars of this age, and some would say cars of any age?
Audi do 5l of Quantum Platinum 5w40 fully synthetic, a genuine filter, and sump plug for around £30.
5k changes with the above must be about as good as it gets?

When i last rung TPS to sort the service parts for my car they said i need to use long life on an engine like mine...
I beg to differ,
I tried to get syntha gold but VAG dont use it anymore.
 
S3 Paul - Pretty sure that Platinum is the direct replacement for Synta Gold, but maybe someone can confirm?
 
I was told that VAG now use the Platinum in both petrol and derv ,
Basicaly anything not on a long life service plan.
I havent been convinced an oil used for ALL vags is a good oil for performance type application

I may well be wrong though
 
I know what you mean. It's listed as being recommended for the R8 though so it can't be all that bad?
 
What oil do you reckon is best if you do a lot of short journeys? Thinkin of getting a interval service done and oil change and inspection at Awesome GTI.

Awesome use Mobil 10w40, which is good stuff! Short journey or long journeys, change the oil every 6-8k :)

Others will no doubt correct me if i'm wrong but isn't swapping from longlife to normal services what causes these engines to sludge up ??? i hope it was given a very thorough flushing when this was done.... also i think Tesco are selling Fully Synthetic Castrol on offer at the mo... £17 for 4 ltrs springs to mind but don't quote me :)
 
Definately interested if that Castol is on offer! Could do with at least doing a cheap change for now, it cant be the right spec though for that price??

I think the longlife is the reason not the change , basically its in there to long for a turbo car with the extreme temps etc, have you noticed the oil is a lot blacker when it comes out then with N/A cars
 
Has anyone used 10-40w Petronas oil. I have aquired a few litres and been told it is a high quality oil.

i use 10/40 millers oil found it the best oil to use plus get it for free :p
 
We sell Longlife oil for £17.99 a litre........

...but the same stuff under a different marque is sold in 5 litre quantities in VW know as Quantum. Thats about £25.00 i think.
 
Was in Tesco again yesterday 4 litres of Castrol Magnatec 5-30 fully synthetic for £ 16.70 offer ends tomorrow is 4 litres enough for our engines ??
 
Dont use 10w40 as it will be semi-synthetic, and hence really shouldnt be put anywhere near a turbocharged engine.

Stick with 5w40.

5w30 is too thin, and does not provide enough protection for the engine, irrespective of what Audi claim.
 
Any more views on this guys? If I were to attempt doing an oil change myself what tools are needed? Sump plug size etc?

Also does anyone know if you can get Quantum oil (the proper VW stuff thats a pretty decent price) at a good price delivered from anywhere? I'm thinking of doing a change to last around 3000 miles then I will be getting a proper service most likely so which oil to go for longlife or?

First of all make sure you can get the filter off, a bit tricky , get a filter removal tool then easy
I think the sump plug is 19mm maybe 18 dont over tighten when replacing as they strip easy
so get engine warm
remove the sump plug carefully, and dont burn yourself have a bucket or something handy to catch it.
remove the oil filter, front of engine midway.
Put some oil around the new oil filter seal, and fill about half way up then put on hand tight only.
refit the sump plug ideally with a new washer then put about 3.5L of new oil in and keep checking....
Start the car and turn back off and check again....done...

Thanks a lot s3dave!! So I guess you do yours yourself then? I will need to get confirmation on the 18/19mm but then I can start gettin the equipment together! Can get removal tools off ebay for about £6 it seems.

Cheers aragorn! Yeah I saw these because I thought oh ebay would be the place but the prices don't seem great. I live like 10-15 miles from a TPS so I should probably just drive but for say £5 postage I thought no why bother, but it seems no place is just selling at usual price plus a bit of postage. I suppose about £30 is the cheapest you are gonna get this oil?

If I were to go for Quantum which one is it? This oil won't be in for long so dont think I'm bothered about longlife stuff just want to right one for turbo and not too thin for engine internals etc. 5w30/5w40/10w40??!! I'm right in thinkin people have said 5w30 is too thin for cars of this age now? Surely its best to stick this in? Some have said that 0w30 was OE standard?? Confused!

All I know is on Opie oils shows that all 5 of the oils they stock for the S3 are all 5w30 IIRC. So is there a Quantum equivalent of these?
 
Quantum Platinum 5w40, nearly everyone on here has recommended it. If you want to use 5w30 because Audi recommends it then you can, but you'll be posting a thread up in a few month saying it's drinking oil :3sadwalk:
