Coil pack wiring

First of all i know this has been covered before but what i want to know is if my wiring is cracked is it worth insulating the individual wires or should i wait until i can afford a new loom as its not something i would do myself as im useless at electrics lol so it will cost me alot probably. The car has developed a slight misfire since the cold weather has started the only other thing it could be is the packs but before i think about that i am going to check the wiring as its a weak point on these cars and probably never been done thanks.

A new loom would be better they do suffer from the heat badly....

The coil pack loom costs about £20.00 from TPS, I have one ready to install but as with all things, I need the time to do the job. I'm gonna solder in the loom to the exhisting run where it runs under the battery as I don't have the correct tools for taking the pins out from the connectors at the ECU end. That way, only 9 of the remaining wires will require soldering (IIRC) in.

As a short term fix, insulating the areas where it has cracked can only be a good thing though.

I saw on another thread that you said they are £20 it might be worth giving it a go myself. The insulation is only intended as a temp fix until i can find the time and money to do it as iv had and got other things to pay out on so once iv got some spare cash i can get it done properly thanks.

Just out of interest how have you gone about using tps as i have phoned my local branch before and they have said they only deal with the trade which i am not in anymore or do you have to lie lol.

Just heat shrink the existing loom up mate. I did and is work A OK 6 months later on....

Thanks i was looking at one of your threads about this but i thought you had replaced the loom obviously you haven't lol it sounds like a better plan than replacing it as i can do it myself

No, same loom. I also did this on another one, however used good old insulating tape as opposed to heat shrink. Simple enough to do, and worked like a charm.

I'm go with that personally, it's much easier than heat shrinking the wires as you have to cut and resolder them to get a good seal.

Good call i didnt think about cutting the wires for the heat shrink. Insulation tape ftw lol.

Makes sure you get a good quality stuff, not pound shop rubbish as that simply doesn't insulate properly.

It also doesn't stick well.

Yeah it will be good stuff i never use cheap stuff you get what you pay for at the end of the day.

I know a lot of electricians / alarm fitters use it but not sure how well it will work as it will be in close proximity to a fair amount of heat. Here's a link on what I mean:

It goes quite brittle when exposed to heat sadly. Also, it's quite thick, and makes it hard to do a tidy job on such small wires....

Good shout though dude, I thought the same thing but dismissed it due to the above reasons.

I'm glad you mentioned that Welly, I had considered using it temporarily until I get the loom replaced / soldered-in but I may as well do the job right. Time to start pulling my finger out and sorting my priorities methinks....

I checked my wiring and found the insulation on the earth wire to the coil packs was broken so i didnt need to strip it all back after all lol but at least i know the wirings ok. Iv re insulated it all though and it seems to have done the trick.

Thanks mate. I wouldnt advise working on a car in this weather i was freezing my nuts off lol but needs must.
