Anyone interested in my next Airbox plans?

Ok in case your not - well sorry I wasted your time in reading this!

Ok so firstly my slight problem is that I won't actually be able to monitor the effect this will have as I don't have VAG-COM to log the results (before/after) but hey ho I'm gonna do it anyway.... If it feels better when it's warmer then result - if I miss my old setup then I'll revert back to it.

At the moment I've drilled some holes on the bottom section of the airbox away from the engine - and I feel now I want to experiment with trying to keep it cooler as I can as whenever I touch it the airbox it's nearly hot enough to fry an egg on it! I believe it performs then it did standard but really does struggle in any decent hot weather... (Ultimately I know the answer is to get a FMIC but funds simply don't allow for that so I thought I'd experiment in what I have)

So I've bought some reflective heat wrap and a hot glue gun and going to cover the outside as much as I can with the reflective heat wrap in an effort to keep it cooler inside. Never seen this done before so unless you have please don't go saying 'it's a pants idea' as you never know if you don't try! Although not the best time to be testing it in the winter lol!

Then as a side note I'll be de-meshing one side of my MAF (after the sensor) so I won't risk damaging it as I've heard mixed reviews of people totally de-meshing there MAFs..... I've already smoothed my airbox fins inside.

Then finally I'm going to reverse the two pipes on my Forge DV as I imagine my airbox will be slient and I really want to hear a tiny bit of woooooosh on lift off! ;) (heard this is totally safe to do)

And then I'll post back here and tell you what happened if anything lol! Planning to do this in the next few weeks..... :cool:

I've got a Jetex cone on mine at the min and i think its sucking to much hot air from the engine. I'm designing a carbon fibre box to fit round the cone with two air feeds one from the front and one from the side.
 
cheers good luck with that - keep me posted! will be similar to the BMC enclosed setup then but I believe that just uses the original intake which is the feed from the wheel arch...
 
Yeah sort of im not going for the cylinder look more square. once i start making it i will take pics and post. I'm going wait till i get back from hoilday next month.

are you making it yourself mate? if so how, are there materials you can buy? i've only got a green cotton panel, with smoothed box and 3.5 inch cai pipe. the reason i didnt go open cone filter is because i didnt want ott induction noise, i like how it is now, but if i could enclose a large cone, obv the standard box is too small, i think it would be the perfect setup, or at least the most logical.
 
I bought a jetex cone filter today and have been lookin for a heatshield but have had no luck in finding one anyone know where I can get one???

Yes im making it from scratch, my idea is to make a square frame out of wood. "2 halfs" then wrap the carbon around the wood. once dry and soild remove the wood. drill holes add mounting bracket of some sort. bobs your uncle. sounds easier than its gonna be but hey its worth a go.

without data, its as much placebo and conjecture tho surely?

I agree Bill it's quite annoying - so I won't be able to prove anything. Arr well...

Only joking! If people didn't experiment, we would still be using rocks as shelters!
 
Ok I'll share my induction efforts aswell, I'm still using a cheapo universal cone which I intend to change but I've got the box pretty well insulated with a healthy cold air feed, I've never done any before & after logs but I can report that over the last 2 weeks in various outside temps after a run the filter box, maf & TIP are all nice & cold to the touch.

I've made the box up out of various bits n bobs I had lying around then wraped it up with foil heat insulating tape, I then opened up the hole in the inner wing where the stock feed comes from & connected the end of the box to the hole using 4"(ish) foil lined ducting for industrial AC systems, the ducting had to stop @ the inner wing because with the wheel arch liner refitted its pretty tight for space, I then found an old rubber intake pipe form one of my previous cars and used this to direct air from the n/s foglight hole towards the end of the ducting @ the inner wing, because the air feed is not directly joined I don't need to worry about sucking up puddles. I still need a end piece for the foglight hole & a couple of other wee tweaks etc to tidy it up a bit but apart from the loss of noise over the previous open filter I'm well chuffed with it.
