New A3 sport 2.0 TDI Sportback (170 HP)

Hi Guys.

i wonder if anyone can help me on this. i have just ordered a brand new shiny A3 sportback Sports. it is the 2.0l TDI 170hp. does anyone know of any real world MPG that this does. i currently get 42 out of my 55 plate golf. just wondering if it will be the same or less.

I used to get around 42-43mpg from my 2007 170PD. I've now got a 2009 140CR which has been remapped to give around 175-180hp and I'm getting around 46-48mpg overall. same driver same type of driving. I new 170CR should give a bit better than my 170PD.

The main let down is the DPF, I had a Leon PD170 with a DPF and could never really get over 45mpg, but people who had it removed got 60+, my mum's Scirocco has the CR170 with a DPF and she gets around 52mpg but only does short distances to work and when I drove it like I did with my Leon, could only get around 40-42mpg.

Thanks for the reply guys. why would the DPF lower the MPG. i dont think i will be able to remove it as it is a company car. as long as it is the same as my golf i will be happy.

When the DPF activates it increases the exhaust temperature to burn off the unwanted soot, therefore putting a toll on the engine, it also creates more back pressure just with it being in the system, it's a costly old business to remove it as a whole new exhaust system is required including a remap, if it's a company car and you're using on motorways you'll be fine, if it's for town driving, you may experience it come on every now and then

Yeah, see a lot of the older 2005 TDI's get alot better mileage then the ones with the DPF, if you drive very carefully you can make it last, but if the DPF isn't cleared out by normal driving, you run the risk of it coming on and your mpg shoots down to 35s, on the plus side, you should pay lower company car tax rates

We get 38ish overall on our 03/2008 170TDi Quattro.. new model with Stop start and CR Diesel should be better. Our previous 03/2005 2.0Tfsi (200 petrol) was hard pressed to ever achieve 30mpg (typically 26) which promted the move to oil.

You not thinking of the old PD engine's Danny?

The new 170CR's don't have the same type of DPF as they burn off the crap as they go along rather than letting it build up to then burn it off like the PD engines do

I hope that is the case smudge don as I have a 2.0TDI 170 S tronic on order and after reading this thread started to worry, but if what you are saying is correct then the new style DPF should be much better.

It is mate, the old PD engines (which i have so i know ALLLLL about it) used to build up the crap and then try to burn it off, so around town my car idles at 1krpm insteam of 800rpm. Plus i lose a bit of power and MPG as a result

The new CR170 engines have a different system where the crap is burnt off as you go along, so is much better

Smudge, I test drove the new Ibiza FR TDI with the 143bhp CR lump in and the DPF light came on after abit of hard driving, but I would hope they're new systems as you said, the old ones were bad! My PD170 did it ALL the time! but still it's something to increase pressure in the exhaust system, without it, cars would achieve higher MPG but higher taxes, can't win

Just a quick update on this. i am getting 37.1 MPG. this is by done by me not the OB comp.

i spent ages working out how much more a quattro would cost me - dip in fule, tax gear oil. it comes to £500 ( this year based on current tax and @ £1.37 ltr.

i downloaded an app for the iPhone. it is so i can monitor the milage for work. it also has a fuel monitor. it works it all out for you. just remember to put the first entry as a full tank. i think it costs 22p a mile.

Got a 170PD DPF and it's average long term is 45mpg and it's not done many long trips recently. If I do longer motorway runs it's generally always over 50mpg. The economy varies hugely on it though (sometimes see almost 60mpg for a trip then 49mpg for the same run), but it's always better than my old 170 DPF, I think my current 170 has had the dealer remap which lowers power but perhaps helps with mpg/dpf issues.

From what I've read the 170CR should see better economy?

What is DPF?. I normally get 35mg on my way to work and 44 on the way back . avg 40, easily can get 45-48 doing motorway (70mph).

Mine does throw out some black smoke when I boot it. Any ideas?
