...for a 88k 1.8TQS with an intermittent oil pressure light (electrical fault apparently) and 8k overdue its cambelt service? It also has little service history for the past few years so would probably need its bushes replacing all round too. Potential can of worms and money pit but could potentially sell for cheap and I can do the work myself.

That intermitent "electrical" glitch is the first sign that the engine suffers from sludging and it will need at least the fuel pump pick-up cleaned and it could have done more damage to the turbocharger and top end... Be carefull and in doubt, take an experienced mechanic with you when you go to see the car ! Could be a bargain in the right hands or a money pit if not carefull !

The only thing that would bother me is the low oil pressure as it has to be seriously low to make the light come on. It's not a five minute job to change the oil pump pickup/strainer but if you are going to do it then I'd stick a new pump in too.

You need to offset your time (labour) and cost of parts against the asking price to see if it really is worth it.

How much is it up for mate?

Not a lot. I bet he knows about the sludge issue but is trying to tell you its an electrical fault. If the engine is goosed take that into account at least.

Well it's up for £1,1k at the moment on eBay and I can't see it selling for much more in light of these issues.

750-1000.
not worth it IMO.
best case you are looking at a new oil pump, c-belt, may as well do water pump while you are there. bushes all round you say, geometry etc probably new arms when you get a closer looks etc.

worse case is that a car that has had no servicing at all is probably still running some gungey long life oil on a shagged pump, your turbo is coked up and has been overheating the bearings for the last 5000 miles, your cam shaft is worn as it is not getting the pressure it needs, need I go on?

thats exactly how mmine started mate, it went bang shortly afterward. been sitting 2 years now.

the electrical fault thing is rubbish, its sludge.

you might want to check hpi too.....

If you can get it for under £900.00 then I'd say it's worth a punt if you're prepared to do the work yourself. If you're planning on paying somebody to do the work then I'd leave well alone as there's hours of labour involved ££££

Around a grand tops, and stick a pump and cambelt kit in her and enjoy.

Electrical fault my ****....LOL

My Tqs had the same issue when I bought it, deffo sludge, I flushed the engine, changed the oil pump, cleaned out the sump (full of gunk) flushed the engine again and it was fine for the couple of years I had the car.

The turbo did eventually give up for the subsequent owner (Drizz) but that was due to a detached wastegate valve.

might also be worth considering the cam tensioner may be at fault.
i went into a garage suspecting oil pick up and left having had
cam tensioner £300+ on its own
cam belt
oil pump
it also decided at that point to throw 3 coil packs so they all got done too

ended up £800 lighter

You were ripped off with the cam chain tensioner, its £100 tops for the part as we don't have VVT or anything silly, it's just hydraulicly controlled

fact i wasn't.
my friend a master tech at VW inchcape in chelmsford checked out the price for me and said even with discount he couldn't get under £300.
perhaps we are talking about different parts?

Yeah I've never seen a cam chain tensioner for our engines over £110 ish either??

Thanks, i know what it looks like. You are talking apples and oranges here. The parts above were not from a B5, you have VVT and paid roughly the right amount from a dealer, although you can get pattern ones for £150 now.

The tensioner for us is £100 from a stealer, and less if pattern.

We appreciate the lesson in car parts though :faint:
