This isn't my car but a family members car has this intermittent issue where it throws thick white smoke out the exhaust and also judders as if its being stalled

Car is now not starting, it's turns over, fires up revs fluctuates up and down 200rpm each way a few times then just cuts out, anybody have any idea what this could be I know its hard to say without seeing but could do with the car for work tonight, and its booked in tomorrow
