I spend quite a lot of my spare time on various VAG forums and I've been noticing a lot of people simply cannot write in English. A lot of posts seem to be littered with txt speak, little or no grammar and various slang from different parts of the country.

What's with that? I'm sure most people who can afford a semi-decent German car must be educated and reasonably articulate. It's not too difficult to write properly, so why are there so many cretins who type out nonsensical gibberish?

No doubt you'll get people defending it saying we have to type properly during the day at work, we can't be ***** to be clever all the time. If you type properly at work, surely that's all the more reason to do the same in the evenings when you're browsing the forums? I appreciate some people may have genuine learning difficulties, but it's very unlikely that all the people writing like kids do.

Before people start calling me a boring old fart, I'm just an irritated 21 year old who is concerned with the bastardisation of our language.:hi:
 
Couldn't agree more. If you can't take the time to write a legible post, then why should anyone help you out?

I know that there have been some pretty bad examples on the 8L S3 forum, and that Glenn some time ago put a sticky around English language which we cross refer to.
 
My English is certainly not perfect but I always try to write complete words and sentences. Makes the forum so much easier to read I think.

There is no limit on the number of characters you can use in a post so it can't be asking the earth!
 
I often miss grammer as I type too fast and TBH I rely on Word to much in work. I got a B in school in english grammer but I really CBA to pay much attention to it now, sue me :)

What a great attitude that is.

If you 'CBA' why should people be ***** to reply to your posts? Also if you rely on Word too much at work, you really should consider a career change.
 
There's nothing I hate worse than text speak. In my eyes it becomes a bigger offence the older you are!

Nobody has to reply to my posts, I reply to other peoples posts I am grateful if they reply to mine.

This is no English lesson, I dont use text speak either, CBA, IIRC and other such abreviations were born on the very internet forums you use everyday, ironic.

Thanks for the career advice dude it would be a bit stupid of me to take it from someone who has never actually met me and seems to think they have the ability to judge someone via forum posts :nyah:
 
There's a difference between txt tlk and shorthand eg. CBA and IIRC as mentioned in above post, some people get too wound up over stupid things....
 
Not quite text speak, but a nice little poem for you:

some people may find it difficult to write the "proper" english, i know for a fact that my english is crap, but if you dont want to reply to my posts thats up to you, theres plenty of other people who try to help and dont really judge on the way people write.
 
Dont know if the rise of the chav has anything to do with the deterioration of the english language.
 
I've got to add, it's a skill to be able to decifer some text talk....

...On the issue of 'txt-spk' on the boards...

I personally prefer to read 'proper' language; I find it easier to read, and often I suppose it will better communicate the substance of the post. I completely understand that not everybody has a thesaurus-like vocabulary, or exemplary command of spelling, punctuation and grammar; and therefore I wouldn't persecute someone for mistakes here and there. Again, abbreviations and odd 'internetisms' here and there are par for the course and I don't see anything wrong there.

It is irritating trying to decode posts that are completely 'txt spk' though - and while it wouldn't prevent me from answering someone's questions (if I could), I would prefer to see at least an attempt at decent language...

Funny thing about text talk is when mobiles became really common people used it to actually speed up texting and it was really common (yes I am old enough to remember this!) But now its evolved into this weird other language where, like you say, its actually difficult to read and people go out of their way to over complicate it completley defeating the original object! Very strange but amusing I suppose

Mcdonalds qualifications malarky really is nonsense, just lowers the value of proper qualifications such as A levels which they are touted to be the equivalent off.

Not only to speed things up, but to also enable longer messages with the allocated 160 characters that go with each text. :icon_thumright:
 
Isn't the proper word for 'txt talk' called 'Weblish'?

I've got to say I dont mind when people write in short hand. If its the odd word then its ok, but as Rob said trying to decipher a whole essay does get a bit boring but I wouldn't get ****** off or annoyed at it.
 
It's not about being a snob, I just prefer to read something which actually makes sense, rather than me having to decipher parts of it because the original poster couldn't be bothered.

I've always been one to use full words on texts, even in the old days of the 160 character limit. My philosophy is that I was taught english at school so im going to use it!

I think its fair to say that a large proportion of the problems we see with this country and indeed the world today is down to people having the "cant be *****" attitude!

Underage pregnancy - cant be ***** to wear a condom
Crime - cant be ***** to get a job
Truancy - cant be ***** to go to school
Public disorder - cant be ***** to be civilised
Unemployment - cant be ***** to get a job, or learn new skills to be able to get a job
Immigration - cant be ***** to challenge Brussels
Extreemism - cant be ***** to get along with my fellow man.

I may be generalising a little its true and I agree there are exceptions, but the fact is human beings have evolved into an inherently lazy species, poor grammar is just another example! There's even a spell checker option when your writing a post!!
 
Standards ! It's all about standards. Everyone in this country has access to free education. Everyone, no matter where you are from.

From my point of view, if you can't be ***** to write a complete sentence, then what else can't you be ***** to do ?

Having a decent personal standard is nothing to do with sobbery etc. It's all to do with how you determine your own personal worth. Rememeber; what and how you type on a forum is the only way you can express the kind of person you are. I for one would prefer to meet and socialise with forum members who can articulate themselves properly and who can be "*****."

EDIT: Just an additon. When I joined this site back in 2004. (yes 4 years ago) The majority of people contributing to the site could actually spell and converse properly. Four years on the standard has gone down dramatically. One of the things thats attracts me to the Audi brand is that it is seen to attract intelligent thinkers who "don't follow the herd." My how that view is changing.

I bet most people that use txt speak all have mobiles that allow multipart sms. So by your rational it should be us oldies that use the text speak as we where limited to 160 characters?

Personally I think it's for people that can't be bothered to type the words correctly. Predictive text is to speed things up.

I've read this debate with great interest but refrained from adding to it up to now, mainly because my views on the subject have been expressed more than once in previous threads. But then I read another thread altogether, in which the original poster started by apologising for his poor English, because it is not his first langauge. He then went on to write a quite detailed post in which the English, though far from perfect, is certainly much better than some that we see on the forum. Here it is, in case anyone wishes to read it.

It has long been an accepted notion that English people are less adept at learning foreign languages (or perhaps they are simply less inclined to) but it is becoming ever more apparent that some English people are no longer bothering to learn their own language properly.

At a time when inward migration is high, and people are complaining that migrants are supposedly taking our jobs, have a think about who you would employ, if you were an employer: a migrant who was taken the trouble to master a foreign language as well as his or her own, or an indigent who cannot (or chooses not to) display any great proficiency in their own native tongue?

Food for thought.

On the face of it this is a trivial gripe, but it stems from the far more important decline of everything that used to be decent in this country. If it isn't nipped in the bud, we'll end up with a whole generation of morons who can't spell, can't type properly (the full alphabet is on the keyboard for a reason), can't string a coherent sentence together and has successfully bastardised what is the most important thing we have as human beings - the ability to communicate properly. To write this gift off as unimportant or petty is really quite unbelievable. Correct grammar & spelling is something that should come naturally, it shouldn't generally require any brain power or time to get right (apart from the usual wierd spellings that take a bit of thought).
Besides you're exercising your brain, when we rely on technology so much for pretty much everything we do these days it's not just our bodies that get fat & lazy.

It may be a trivial issue to the anti English brigade, but surely it doesn't take any extra effort to write properly. We are all literate and fairly numerate, it's not too difficult.

It does do my head in though how people share there opinion of which we are all entitled too and people take offence to it. If you don't like it, don't read it or reply to it. Simple!

I've got to say, this thread reminds me of a customer I had in my shop a few years back, and young local chav type bloke in his late teens, dressed quite poorly. He strolls in acting like some kind of a hardman, then asks me 'wot curries d'you do?', my reply was 'my menu is over there mate', pointing into the direction of a rather large menu, he follows this up with 'I dunno how to read!'.... at this point, there is silence in the shop, I'm gobsmacked, but I go through the menu with him so he can purchase his beef curry and chips.
I'm not too sure what my feelings was afterwards to this chap, he's a local englishman who can't read English due to lack of education which is suppose to be free. Felt a bit sorry for him and at the same time embarrassed that he had to admit his lack of reading skills to a chinese guy, but he was greatful that i helped him out, not seen him since though....
 
Same thing with those adverts they were showing last year about getting help on learning to read as an adult? How on earth could you operate as an adult and not be able to read? Really, really worrying.
My 4 year old can read stuff like "Cat Sat on the Mat" - truly unbelievable
 
I would also say thanks for this if it had not been covered about 50 times in the past, not least by myself...
