Is this thing really needed if so i guess Audi is the only place for one of these . driving through floods has ripped mine off. Well 3 of the fixings removed the last one yesterday as it was rattling on exhaust

I would say no mate. It's just a heat shield. I all but ripped the one off my escort cosworth on a forest track and just pulled it off. And the exhaust on the cossie could get ****** hot. (Red turbo after a good run from Ripon to Perth) no problems, no fires. I'd say get rid!

It's there for a reason to try and stop the heat from the exhaust radiating through into the car. I am sure you won't get any issues running without it though. I have found that you seem to get an electrolytic reaction between the aluminium and the steel fixing that causes corrosion and weakens the mounting points.
I have had to put large washers over the mounting points in the past to secure these when they have come loose.

one section of mine was loose and I just removed it no issues here, have also run other cars without it with no effect at all

I noticed my rear right heat shield hanging down the other day actually because two of the fixing points had corroded through. Any chance you have any dimensions of the washers?

Thanks, Az.

If you measure the size of the hole add 10mm and get yourself some stainless penny washers.
This seller has them in various sizes 5 for 99p. Just find the right size for the bolt diameter M5 will probably do but check.

Thanks, ended up making a pair at work from stainless steel with 50mm outer diameter and 10mm inner diameter so I can adjust the position accordingly on the heat shield, fitted yesterday and it worked a treat!

Thanks for all the help, Az.
