    Fuel filler flap locking actuator

    Hi all
    Started fitting the Cobra rear parking sensors earlier to my Avant, Had to remove the Bose system to get to a couple of the nuts, which exposed the broken actuator for the locking system for the fuel filler flap, great chance to replace it now

    Has anyone removed one of these as i cant actually see the head of the two retaining screws, they appear to be in the inner wing. Anyone and ideas on how to remove it please?

    The picture below isn't my car but you can see the problem of removing it. Thanks for looking

    IIRC when I removed from someone else's, you had to loosen them with alan key & slide it out of position.

    Nigel. Are the Alan key heads hiden in the inner wing on the reverse of the actuator ?? so you're working blind as such?

    No, afaik they're the ones facing you, so you have full view of what you're latched onto.

    The heads on the other side are what holds the item tight against the chassis.

    I may be looking at totally the wrong thing Nigel but i cant see how i can get a alan key to fit on the front of the actuator.

    I looked again tonight and also looking at the picture i posted, the two fixings poking through at bottom left and top right aren't alan key heads
    am i looking at this right mate??

    What a twit I am, sorry I must have been in work mode, it states you need to use an hexagonal socket to undo them, apologies.

    Thanks buddy, sorry didn't like to doubt you. Do you mind me asking where you saw the info regarding requiring hexagonal socket to remove??

    Well I've removed a few myself & also the audi bible lol.

    Haha! would you kindly take a look at these pictures Nigel? it shows the screw heads on the back of the unit. But as you say, can i remove it by fixing a hexagonal socket on the front of them and turning anti clockwise??

    Yeah you should be able to fit hexagon socket & remove either clockwise or anti, you'll figure it out

    Thanks mate, Last question i promise.... Would i be better off getting this part from Audi main dealer to avoid another premature failure??

    Thats your choice lol, but if its cheap enough just get from audi for a 2 year warranty.

    I have one i took off my mk4 Golf as it had jammed up. Its sitting in my Garage if you want it . Bloody thing worked perfectly as soon as I went to remove it.

    Hi,

    I've just bought a 2007 A4 Avant, and I have the same broken actuator problem!

    It looks like a real conundrum to get the old part off and a new one on without taking panels off!

    Can you let me know how you did it in the end as I can't understand how you can unscrew 2 screws when the heads are hidden?

    If I remember correctly they turn the opposite way to what would be normal, Was a pain to get out ,literally. Fitting new one was minutes .

    So what tool did you need? My guess is that you're turning the screws from the "wrong" end, so need something like pliers to grip and turn them... Is that the answer?

    Yes, I used long nose pliers and a very small wonder wrench that grips any bar and doesn`t slip.

    My new actuator turned up today, delivered to my door from Audi £13 all in!! From looking at the new unit i still cant see how to remove/fit
    When you grip the hexagonal end of the screws that's visible inside the boot and undo them, buy the time the end had disappeared into the actuator the unit still wont come free from the cars body!

    Real head scratcher as others have said its a easy job, maybe i'm looking to hard and cant see the wood for the trees!
    My new actuator may soon be on ebay!!

    If you can get to/reach the actuator try lifting it manually, spray some wd or the likes down the shaft. Move it up and down lots.
    Try the button and see if it releases

    Thanks for that buddy. Car is completely immobile at the moment, its 6ft up in the air with no wheels as they are away for refurb and the sump is about to be dropped for balance shaft inspection. I may call on you when its all back together.
