alternator

i was reading though some old post an seen that some had put that there alternator was whining cause of something to do with there aftermarket stereo, mine is whining but i thought it was my bearings on there way out but im not sure now after seeing that thread, theres not much he's written up on it, just something about an earth wire or something, can any1 help cause dont want to change the alternator if i dont need to cheers

Turn off your stereo and if the whine goes away you can rule that out, Next step is to remove the belt and spin the alternator pulley by hand if the bearings sound course change it or get it refurbished.
