Oil Warning Light Problem, HELP 1st ever Audi

I bought a 2004 Audi a4 1.8 turbo on Sat, Test drove it, inspected whole of car, nothing obviously wrong, Full main dealer Service History. Car had even just had a basic service inc oil filter and renewal of oil (fully synthetic) 3 days before. Then ion way home while driving oil light started flashing, thought I'd stop at next garage and get some more oil, then engine started to sound a bit roar and a l tittle rattly So pulled the car over asap on hard shoulder, Whilst pulling over i noticed s i was driving that thecar wouldn't go above 3,500 RPM no matter what and when pressing accelerator harder some smoke cam out of exhaust? AA picked me up and said it was possibly oil pump, residue and then the turbo? Oil was in the pipe leading to the turbo?

Why don't Audi just admit failure here, and help us as it was my first Audi, and already i feel like never buying one again. Any clues as to what really has happened here sounds just like the above.

Anyone had any luck going to Audi? Awaiting repair bill!

Sounds like what happened to me on saturday, my 1.8t sport had the same problem. Did any lights stay on the dash?

Heard this so many times now, happened to me the new synthetic oil and the drive home sounds like it has loosened some crap and blocked the oil pickup pipe common fault no oil getting to the top end need to get it to an indy. Did you get it from a dealer?

Private sale i'm afraid, not good, thanks for all you quick relies, if 3200 might as well buy another car. The AA have taken it to an indy garage and hopefully will only need the oil pump. I just thought they hadn't reset the oil light after the service. In the USA they did a recall on all the 1.8 turbos from 1997 to 2004, why not here, We are too soft! How come KIA will cover a car fro 7 years and Audi probably don't want to know.

If worse possible news, do you think i have any rights fgoing back to the guy i bought it from? Given all the history, receipts provided?

When i stopped the car the engine oil light and check service button returned no issues on the screen, shame as the engine before the problem was the best i had driven, extremely fast and comfortable! It is the 190BHP version Lights didn't stay on,

It happened to me in 2007 on another I bought, happened within 4 weeks of having it and it was serviced on Longlife and done on time everytime...still went bang.
New Turbo, recon engine + fitting cost me 3200.
Its alright saying buy a new car but when it actually comes to it, it'll be a different story trust me. You get stuck in a dilemma, what with what you spent on buying the car then selling it as a Breaker...you do the math!

When it happened to me, I rang the guy I had it off and he was quite understanding, he knew by how I was talking that I was depressed (...being my first Audi) so after several days he phoned me back and dais he will give me 500 back towards the repairs which was good of him because he could have just blanked me. It was an ex-rep car that was serviced on time everytime but with the Crap Longlife oil service (...here we go with the Longlife lover massives )

It all depends on what type of guy you bought it off!

The Oil light WILL come back!!!

I bought the Audi A4 1.8 tubro 190BHP Ltd edition model 134K on clock for 3960 Has had services at, 19k long life, 38k longlife, 58 k longlife, 78kclonglife, 98k longlife, 118k longlife128k longlife, 134k inspection oil change (2nd march). So yes longlife does suck, maybe for a diesel? But not a petrol, but hey i don't really know.

Thought i was lucky as bid on ebay and got a bargain, however i think it was too good to be true.

When it went bang was it like a real BANG!!!!!????? Mine just made some little weird noises and now sounds harsh. What do you mean the oil light will come back? I hope not as its parked outside a garage awaiting them to turn up Monday morning. I'm not driving it at all was towed straight away. Do you mean it would have come back on if i was still driving it?

Good price - Just a shame you didnt run it by us before( but you wasnt to know obviously) because you would have seen my comment straight away to have it booked in for new Oil pump and Pick-up straight away. When anyone on here or who I know of mention buying a 1.8T I always without fail advise them to get a New Pump/pick up asap just for reassurance. Soon as I bought this Blue one I had it in for the new parts within a week and that was with only 48k on the clock!

On a serious note though, Id say thats a Good Price. More or less the Sline apart from few bits inside!

Just been told by my in law who had a 2004 audi fro a couple of years as a company car that his audi used to go into like limp home mode or shutdown if something went wrong that required the engine to not go above a certain amount of stress until sorted? He said it happened a few times, he got annoyed in the end and cos it happened in some trivial times and in the end found out how to reset it, something like turning the key over 3 times or something? Anyone know whether this could have been the case with me?

no bud, limp mode is orchestrated by the ecu based on data from sensors, oil starvation doesn't show up

How much for turbo? Seen a new one on ebay for 260 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT and an oil pump for 35. But not sure if these are good prices. If need a new engine do you think i should sell for salvage and start again, taking back as much money as possible?

Ahh yeah obviously If you carry on driving it, it will come back, could be weeks.

Mine literally went Bang but take into account that I had my stereo on pretty loud so it was most likely Tapping like a mad-un before it finally gave in so maybe I could have caught a squeeze!
3rd lane sitting at 85mph (sorry Officer), few frog hops, loss of power, speed slowing down into middle lane, stereo down - Lots of loud tapping banging noise from the bay, stuck the foot flat, still no power, slow lane straight into hard shoulder, doing around 40mph and Bang, Puff of smoke out the rear, engine died. Got out, Oil pissed out everywhere. Side of the engine had an Inch crack in it...could have swam in the oil, it all just fell out!

You probably got away with the seriousness of new engine, might just be new turbo, strip engine down, new pump/pipe (get the water pump done aswell at the same time which is another reassurance and is a chea part.May aswell whilst your engine is apart) 1WHEEL on here had same issue, his mrs drove for around another 25mls and he got away without needing a new engine.

Now you mentioned that you paid that for it then you could possibly sell as salvage. Id paid 5500 for mine at the time and it was bog standard so stood to lose alot of money selling it as a breaker/salvage.
Lets see how you get on with the garage first then wort out sourcing your parts after.

water pump shown in records was last done at 113k along with cam belt, also just read on receipts engine flush took place on all longlife services, how often do you recommend changing the oil and would you flush the engine at same time also?

Don't sound to good to me either but getting back to the problem at hand, Have the engine pressure tested to make sure all cylinders are ok then have the engine flushed and a new oil pump and pick-up pipe fitted. You may also want to have the Oil feed pipe to the turbo replaced while your at it.

If the turbo died then white solid smoke tends to come out the exhaust so you might be lucky but have these things checked out first.

Yeah i agree does sound weird to have a service then sell, but who knows, said to guy at garage that the engine oil pressure may just say its ok even though we all know its not, i think he is going to just go head and fit new oil pump, and pipes, ill mention the oil feed pipe to the turbo to him, he said he was going to drop the sump tomorrow and have a real good look and see where else is contaminated with sludge. He said he'd be able to inspect the turbo and see if it can be saved in any way? Did have some white smoke, but only when i really pushed the accelerator after the oil light came on and i couldn't work out why i wasn't gaining any power. Nightmare!

By the way the ebay add mentioned before is the correct one. He has text me since getting home but not going to reply until i really no all the issues. Not sue whether to have believed him or not. However judging by the notorious reputation of the 1.8t engine sludge problem probably was going to happen at some point?

Hi, i've just brought a A3 1.8t quattro today and same problem..... on the way home 25 miles from where i brought it oil light came on. I loss power and carired on driving at low reeves and pulled over to the next garage 2 miles down the road. There i noticed the tapping sounds and smoke. engine still runs. I rang the man who sold me the car who owns his own garage and he was giving me the load of crap about 'well i dont no how its been drove', 'Did u put right fuel in?' i wasn't having none of it as i no where his garage is and told him he needs to sort something. We then agreed to drop him 1 of the keys off me having other key, the log book and signed receipt. He insisted he hasn't sold me a duff car, which i believe now after reading this useful thread, it seems to be common fault. The man said he will fix the car and pay for it to a certain extent...
I'm just wondering if anybody has had this problem without the engine going bang and what parts needed replacing etc as im hoping the engine will be ok.. Thanks for your time and above infomation ...

Have a search on here for similar problems Gary, it won't be a good read unfortunately.

The oil pick on the 1.8T is prone to blocking up when incorrect oil/longlife servicing is used. This will starve the engine of oil, and initially it tends to kill the turbo and shortly after the rest of the engine will follow suit.....

You've got a good case if this all happened within 25 miles.

when i had a metro turbo dont laugh i used to have to wait 30 seconds before turning it off?

I always let the turbo cool. I usually drive steadily for the last couple of miles of the journey, and then just let the car idle while I undo the seatbelt and collect my stuff together, usually for about 30 seconds. Sometimes less if it's late at night and the six rattly diesel cylinders can seem a bit loud .....
