Hey all,
Just bought myself a 1.8T A4 and need to know anything/everything about getting the best out of the turbo. This is the first turbo i have driven so take it than i am a novice...

I've also been looking at having it remapped.

Cheers for any help!!! :hi:

Nice one for the quick reply DPM...

What about letting the engine heat up/cool down before working the turbo and at what sort of revs will it kick in?

Should i be looking at upgrading the cooling system/brakes or anything with the remapping?

...well newA4 member...where do we start??

Just aslong as you realise once you catch the bug, its hard to get rid of it.

Take a look at my first pic, I was only intending on Colourcoding, Wheels and Mp3 Player... Yes I caught the bug mate.

Firstly Id be getting a Nice aftermarket Exhaust then get it remap'd.
I havnt changed my filter....yet, still thinking about that one. Then look into an uprated Diverter valve and if you want to go a little further then grab a N75j Valve. See my previous threads on that one!!

Without a rolling road Id guess mine is around the 210Bhp mark - give or take a little.

As for the 'letting it cool down' and Warming up mode, well with all Cars especially turbo's you should always let it warm up before you give it lead foot. As for cooling down, I dont bother with that as I class mine as a Baby turbo (163t model before remap), not a massive turbo. As for my 300Bhp Scooby then I do (when I get chance to drive it that is) go easy before I switch her off, I have a turbo timer on it which allows me to remove keys, get out the car, Go in home switch the kettle on and its still running for 90 seconds.

The brakes are my next upgrade as Im about due anyway so may aswell pay the little extra to have some attractive Discs and pads - so yes thats a good option.

The Cooling system is your choice, Go for the Front mounted intercooler, another mod I suppose Ill look into later on down the line.:o.k:

Be warned mate, It doent stop there.....:icon_thumright:

That turbo on there is still a turbo and is still gonna get hot!!! Now youve had a remap that turbo is only gonna get hotter, would strongly advise you let this run down properly or else its gonna cost u a turbo!!! Even diesels turbos should be run down properly, not that many people do but thats probably why diesels throw turbos anything between 80k and 120k, if they were looked after properly they would last alot longer. Would strongly advise you dont take your motor above 2krpm until shes hot, take your time for the last few miles of your drive and let her warm down for around a minute, but in my case the time it takes to reverse down my drive and into my garage is time enough. We had to run down turbos on the old R5 GT Turbos and RS Turbo escorts ect, your A4 163 remapped to roughly 210 does not have such a small turbo in comparison does it????:keule:

Fair comment Doc, I get what you are saying, what I meant to say is I dont sit there for 2mins running idle before I switch her off...but.....it dont matter.:)
I had a R5 gt Turbo and yes thats right what you are saying...but....It dont matter..:respekt:
:icon_thumright: we learn from each other I guess...but....only kidding!!!

Look at it one way, when turbo goes its a crackin excuse to replace ot with one thats capable of suckin grannys with nissan micras in LOL. I sold my 53 plate WR1 scooby and im struggling to comprehend what ive done!! Its just a good job my a4 is built well and exellent on juice.!!:scared2:

Just been following the thread with interest, talking about turbos mines a 190 sport, is that the same turbo as the 163 or a different turbo

isnt yours a k03s pav??

Mines just a K03.

Doctor, Thats what I was thinking about, Wouldnt mind a K04 turbo, Heard they give a right good suck!!:eyebrows:

I understand completely about your scooby aswell, When I get the chance in mine (thats if my Bro or dad aint hammering it) It brings that certain smile to my face everytime but they are just so tinny compared to the Solidness of the Audi. You shut your door on a Scooby, start the engine and Grooowllll its ready for action. You shut the door on your Audi its like you gone deaf:wacko:

Yeah mine is a K03s but to me that means jack - I just thought it was the same turbo used in all 1.8t's and that they just sooped the power up!

Come on Doc, help us out!!

Think with your turbo, you have better chances to upgrade power as apposed to my dry K3..:sorry:

To go any further youd be better with bigger turbos, total decats and a proper rolling rd setup, to do it proper i think you will have to put larger intake pipes on, freeflow larger manifold and defo sort them midgy intercoolers them cars run if you wanna get serious, it all depends on haow far you want to go, cos then your gettin into needin beefy clutches ect. Jabbasport would be the best to speak to as they live and breathe thes motors. Or just buy a cheap scooby to bumble round in lol:jump:

I would put a FMIC on before the remap too.Suspension is crap on the A4 if its an SE not sure about the sport,i would still change it.RS4 RARB will work wonders on the handling too.You can upgrade the brakes quite cheap using either B5 or B6 S4 ones, both will be a big improvement on what you have now.

Personally Im content with the power on my 1.8t 190 , if all depends on how far you want to go in the quest of more power. If I wanted more horses I would have opted for a car with more horses in the first place - I remember my friend had a fiat uno sport few years back and the 1 litre turbo engined was like **** off a shovel.

..but pav, Can you afford the S4???:eyebrows: I understand where you coming from but my reason for that was I couldnt afford a bigger powered car.
You can spend thousands on a 1.8t and get it hyped up to 300bhp but still alot cheaper than an S4 - just my quids worth..and the s4 b6 isnt turbo'd either.

Ive also had one of them Uno's back in the day, I limo blacked all the windows and couldnt see a godd damn thing... Wonder why!!!

(Even tried a daihatsu charade, Nifty little buggers)

I had a argument with the mrs and jumped straight in it one cold night and thrashed it off straight away, never did run right after, Goes back to the fact you should always warm your motor up.

So pav, No remap in the pipeline then??? Go on, You know you want to...Well worth the £300.

At this moment in time the only thing Ive got on my mind is revision as Ive got my exams at the end of the month, nothing else seems to interest me but I know the moment theyre over i'll be looking at a new exhaust, remapp, tints and an rnse - probably in that order

Good lad, Got your head screwed on.......Exhaust first I mean.:)
