2nd Service Due?

Got a 04 Sline, had its AVS first service last Jan @ 10000k miles, been a year and now DIS showing that service due in 30 days/4500 miles, I have only covered 6k miles in the year as I do lots of very short journeys. Total mileage now is 16500.

Does this indicator mean I go for the 30 days or the 4.5k miles, I assume it is the whichever comes first, drive the car hard sometimes(have Revo Re-map) but certainly not to excess, looking for advice do I wait another 4k miles then get it serviced every 10k miles as standard or stick to AVS and have it only last about 7k miles due to driving conditons journey/style ie lots of short jouneys.


Any suggestions most welcome.

If you're on AVS then you should take the earliest, be it mileage or days.

I seem to remember that if you're on fixed mileage it's 10k or 12mths, again, which ever comes soonest, so not sure you'd gain anything by switching.

The whole point of AVS is if you do high mileage. - Up to 2 years and 20,000 odd miles.

If you're doing less than 10000 miles a year then there's not much point being on it as you're not going to get the benefit from the extended (and variable) intervals. Obviously if you’re doing less than 10k a year (with short journeys) then the car’s going know that and shorten the intervals accordingly.

If you had a servive last Jan and the car's telling you it needs a service now (or in 30 days) then it may not have been set to AVS last time..... Maybe it was just set to annual (10k) servicing? It just seems a bit short to me.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My opinon is you've spent the think end of £500 on a remap and are putting the car under more stress (no question) so why skimp on an oil change? I change the oil and filter once a year on my car myself. The £40 it costs me doesn't bother me, it's worth it for the peace of mind. It's my car and I'll keep it for 5 years +.

Take the car in for an annual service and oil change.If they don't use the LongLife oil then that will save a bit (from Audi anyway!)

Am I right in thinking that the annual service is cheaper than an AVS? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks for the reply, the car was defo set on AVS service as after the service it was stating around 14k miles & 500+ days to next service.

As for cost that is not an issue although will not take it back to Audi as charged nearly £300 last year for basic oil change service, have found a good local independant or will take it to Skoda.

Obviously the fact I do lots of short journeys has had a major effect on the time but would have thought it would have been more than £6k miles as still using fully synthetic oil.

I have heard a lot of bad things about variable service. At the technical forum at the last 2 Audi Internationals none of the panel of experts (inc AMD, Dialynx, Kim Collins etc) had a good word to say about it. Change the oil once a year or every 10,000 was their (and my) advice.

That's true I guess.Audi must have some sort of criteria built into the AVS computer..... Maybe it's because you've done less than 10k in the year, it automatically says 'oil change at 365days'...?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif


Just shows you how bad stop/start stuff is for your oil. Don't forget how rich an engine has to fuel when it's cold - some of that extra fuel will end up in the oil. Also you will always get condensation forming in the cam covers of an engine that hasn’t been run long enough to fully heat up and evaporate it away…. That water will make a mess inside your engine too.

As XVW says, if you really want peace of mind , then once a year or every 10k miles is the best bet for the longevity of your turbo/engine.

I'm going to take mine right up to the two years (it's on AVS) , because I know it's had an oil change done by me and I've reset the service indicator at 1 year... Having a FOAF who's an Audi master tech helps too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Skoda dealer seems like a good idea, I know where you're coming from with £300 odd for kicking the tyres and dropping £45 worth of oil /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Got a month to go, so have time to find somewhere cheaper than Audi, prob gonna go to a local guy I have used for the wifes Polo who is a VW specialist and does the Jabba re-maps but unfortunatley did not have the map for my car last year.

All the service is just basically an oil change anyway...........

Know what you are saying about short journeys, the reason I had service done last year before it was due was that there was a yellowish gunk on the inside of the oil filler cap, has not returned but as I intend to keep car like you for 5+ years needs to be looked after.

No one has anything good to say about AVS, it's basically just a marketing spin. It won't save you any money unless you're doing alot of m'way miles.
Get it set back to standard 10k/12mnth intervals
