S3 fuel consumption - Now with added poll!

    hey guys

ok ive only had my S3 since saturday and only done about 60 miles, but the fuel gauge seems to be going down pretty fast (there has been some fast driving)

but basically how many miles do you guys normally get to a tank on your S3?

    Cheers

    Paolo

I also do mainly short journeys and average 23 - 24 mpg, on a run 30mpg is easy enough at a steady 80, you don't buy an S3 for economy, a previous FWD TT 2.0T and Mk5 Gti both averaged 29mpg same driving.

I don't think it's that bad, how many cars that have over 300bhp could better it apart from the Twin turbo 3.0 BMW engine of course, they really are amazing on fuel, only RWD though.

Just enjoy what you have and develop 'blinkers' at the petrol station

Had mine since the 1st March and now got 1k miles on it. According to DIS it's avereraging 23.4mpg. This seems about right to amount of fill ups.

This is mostly town / short dual carriageway driving. Not too shabby for a 260hp 4wd car on 19's to be fair.

We didn't buy them for fuel economy now did we !

I get 24 mpg on my 20 mile urban commute with a bit of dual carriageway blast at the start. It's roughly half what my old Golf GT TDi 150 used to get on the same commute, but as they've all said, it's not our main priority when buying an S3.

    Get out and enjoy it...

Usually around the 300 mark. I always try to get 300 to a tank so the rest is a bonus!

The new single turbo 3.0i BMW engine! Even lower CO2, and better economy (allegedly)!

My S3 managed around 26 overall.

Early days for me so far, just over 400 miles on clock but so far it is averaging 27 to 29 MPG on journeys, but I would guess after it is run in, it will go down, but as the engine loosens up maybe it will not change a lot, but I was hoping for around 30 MPG, and chances are it could easily do it as well, I do live in the Country, but still constantly over taking with a few roundabouts on all my journeys, it is DSG as well.

Just as a matter of interest do most people just use normal unleaded in S3's, or is it worth the extra cost of these V power unleaded options etc?

As this question keeps coming up I thought this would be a good opportunity to create a decent thread that can be linked in the FAQs thread.

I think it's best if you tick the range you NORMALLY get from your car. Whatever your style of driving or the type of roads.

My car is standard and my journey to work has a mix of city, motorway and country roads. I can get over 350 on a tank doing this trip, it drops closer to the 250 mark when Im driving through the city.

For a car that does 0-62 in 5.7 seconds I think its good value, the last car I had was an S4, which was just as quick. It has a larger tank and I was lucky to get 300 miles on it. Dam anoying having to fill up twice a week becuse a tank would only last 4 days.

My car is the standard S3 with S-tronic gearbox. My DIS shows 27mpg since the last reset which puts me into the 250-300 range.

For a quattro with 261bhp that can do 0-62 in 5.5seconds I think this is fairly amazing. Of course, you can put your foot down and see <10mpg easily :-)

Recently I've been Sunday driving and getting a regular 310 miles out of it across a mixture of road types.

If it's just round town that quickly drops to 260.

If you properly enjoy a tank on road....220ish

Track day....140-160miles depending on how fast a track it is.

I wish we got 99ron fuel in Northern Ireland

Personally, Texaco SUL is the best for MPG for the S3

Boydie's question begs another one. Which RON do you run on and does it make a difference to your mpg? Currently I'm mixing the tanks a bit as 97/98ron makes the wallet feel empty

I don't think I've put more than 20 litres of 95RON in the S3 in 3 years (only when nothing else is available).

Don't want to have the car constantly adapting, and manufacturers recommendations say the car will run optimally on 98, so I stump up for Shell V-Power as and when it available (otherwise whatever else is on offer Tesco 99 / BP Ultimate).

I don't care so much about MPG, I just want the car to run well and to limit any internal deposits as much as I can.

A bit of a tenuous link, but when you have stage 2+ I don't think it makes any sense to go for the cheap option. You wouldn't find an athlete being fed a poor diet if they wanted to perform well, so as fuel is the only food that goes in the cars belly I apply the same logic and just hope that it's not plain old marketing hype.

Before remap, I used normal unleaded for a while so I could get used to fueling the thing as I have driven derv for 7 years!!

Now its SUL all the way and it varies between Sainsbury's, Texaco and BP. I favour Texaco but if cash is tight, I go for Sains!

Your previous post suggests you get 300miles out of the tank so that's not bad. The extra power through your car must result in lower MPGs so my bog standard S3 should do alright. Your analogy is spot on... that must give much sportier cars a real surprise

I use the AccuFuel app on my iPhone and over the life of the car, 13,300kms I'm getting 9.6/100km, which is 29.43mpg. According to my car's on board computer that figure is 9.4/100km (30.05mpg).

Assuming I used all 55 litres per tank that would give a theoretical range of 570km (350 miles).

Note, my figures were given a healthy reduction after covering 2200km+ over Easter where I did a lot of highway/freeway driving. Over that period I averaged around 8l/100km (35.5mpg). The on board computer reading for the life of the car dropped from 9.9l/100km to 9.4l thanks to all those highway miles.

I generally drive for lowest fuel consumption when commuting to and from work, but most trips I usually have at least one decent squirt. And when I attack my favourite twistys I don't hold anything back! I expect that overall consumption figure will work it's way towards 10l/100km again pretty soon, haha.

I don't know some of you get such bad fuel economy. The other day I filled up at Uttoxeter, drove to Bedford and did some town driving, then to Stansted and back, my average speed was 61MPH (the roads were very clear ) and still managed to get 27.2 MPG!

I wouldn't want to scare myself and analyse this topic too much. I cruise at 85-90 (where possible) and get up there quickly, drop to 2nd for 99.9% of corners at 20mph unless the circumstances dictate, and with the air-con on too, well, reckon I'm guzzling juice.

Driving to Vienna - Budapest - Frankfurt on Thursday so I'll be able to accurately map the full tank's distance.

Oh yes, German Autobahns here I come - with my de-restricting remap!

Does anyone know what the top speed is on an S3?

250kmp/155mph is it's factory restricted top speed. What's its remapped, de-restricted top speed???

There is no limiter on the S3. I've had 165+ out of mine.

It's a big subject and there's no 100% answer but I notice a difference in fuel economy and performance.

Okay, interesting. For a start let me say that I've only had my S3 since March and I had my modifications/remap done within a week. So a) I never drove it above 110 pre remap, but b) the re-mappers said, "the limiter is off now too," and c) every technical reference to it states "limited to 250kph/155mph".

So if you've not had a remap and taken it to 165+ then that's obviously a fact but raises an interesting contradiction: is an Audi S3 (factory) speed-restricted; or not?

Well mine was remapped at the time but I've never heard anyone say that a map removes the limiter. I'm pretty sure a standard S3 would go above 155 too. In fact I'd lay money on it. BUT please let's keep this thread as a fuel economy thread mate.
