    S3 Fly Wheel Problem

    Hi all,

Another lurker takes the plunge and registers, so this is my first post. Unfortunately it is not under the best circumstances.

I have been searching for some time on the site for information on a problem with my 2007 S3; in that over the last few months I have been plagued by a metallic knocking noise from the engine between 2k -4k revs, underload. Not unlike the engine noise of the old Talbot Sunbeam - i.e. crap.

Anyway...having had it examined by Audi for a 2nd time (the first time the technician couldnt hear/find a problem! ), they have diagnosed a disintegrating fly wheel!

The vehicle has only 7k and has not been tracked/NBR or modified.

I would appreciate advice on whether this is a known 'one off' fault or symptomatic of something more sinister, clutch probs, etc.

I should explain that I have less than no idea about mechanical issues.

Sorry that it's such a bone first post and promise to try and bring some cheer in future.

    Many thanks,

    AR

people only tend to post when they have problems so dont worry LOL. The dual mass flywheel is known to go on the A3/S3 (also on most other brands of cars too!). 7K is low for it to fail though, surely it will be sorted under warranty?

I had a DMF fail on my MK5 Golf Gti after 14K miles.

It manifested itself as clutch slip after a remap.

    Its warranty, simple as.
Its a known fault regardless of what `party line` ******** the dealer tells you.

    You have no worries.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

Thanks for the quick responses, very much appreciated.

This has shocked me though as it is the first car I have owned that has suffered - what I would say is - a serious fault. As you mentioned, it has only done 7k and hasnt been ragged.

To be fair to the dealer, they fessed up straight away that it would be warranty repair.

My only criticism is: the courtesy car is a boggo WHITE A3 diesel, when there was a lovely S5 there too.

EDITED TO ADD: So what ACTUALLY has gone wrong with the fly wheel?

    If I understand it correctly...

The DMF is 2 plates with a damper in between.

The idea being that any transmission vibrations are `smoothed out`.

The `damper bit` ****s itself and the DMF is subsequently ****ed.

Then,....the dealer fixes it and you get the car remapped straight after.

Then you live happily ever after.

    Cheers

One of those "WTF are you laughing at?" moments from the Frau.

That is quality mate, I guess I better sharpen up on here.

    Hats off.
