    S3 Insurance?

Got my renewal today which is 50% up on last year so looking around..

    Appreciate some pointers gents.

Best quotes on Confused.com coming in around Ł450 but jump to Ł750 with a remap.

Adrian Flux coming in at Ł530, Ł630 with a remap.

Im average Joe, not particularly high risk, 30 something, family, mortgage, white collar, SP30 etc etc...

    Any ideas?

My next step would be to trawl the insurance pages of the the Performance car mags such as EVO, Max Power (Just kidding !!) etc. but hope you can save me some calls and wacky quotes and a bit of time with some suggestions?

In the last 5 yrs or so Ive only ever used Confused or Adrian Flux so a bit out of touch.

    Cheers
    Paul

I'm 21 and the best i've found was direct line at Ł1100.
Bearing in mind all other quotes have been well over Ł3k its worth looking into and their not on any of the comparison websites either.

    Had a confused.com quote for Ł9,999.00......was tempted.

Comparison websites are great for std cars, not so for mods.

    cheers

I've always had good quotes from Directline too. Usually quite a bit cheaper than the rest

Can you get away with a remap on the insurance even if you do have to claim?

Was thinking about it earlier, if you have a used car with a remap is there anyway they could prove that you knew about the remap?

Big subject mate, probably been debated already.
Has all kinds of moral and financial risk implications though.

The likelyhood is that it would never be detected if the worst was to happen, assuming the car looks std and there is no reason to look for it.

And if the car is stolen and never turns up then it makes no odds anyway.

The safe bet is to declare it.

As it happens Ive had a write off claim before on a car that had been lowered and a flowed supercharger and still got paid out. Lucky ? maybe.

Im not sure that insurance assessors have the expertise to flag up a modded car anyway, again, unless it has the obvious big wheels, spoilers, neons etc ....well mine didnt, thankfully.

In real terms a car with a remap doesnt make it more `steal-able` as its an invisible mod, and a remapped S3 is only 10-15% bhp over std so heavily loaded premiums are unjustified IMO.

It would appear that the specialist insurers have a more sensible approach to mods anyway.

You takes your chances as they say...........

    Cheers

I think if it was only a remap and set of OEM or replica wheels that would be fine with out declaring to the insurance company. Morally insurance companies basically adopt an approach of guilty until proven innocent which is unfair on the masses who drive sensibly and are aware of the responsibilitly of driving so I would quite happily keep any minor mods quiet.

I could go on forever, but if i had a completely modified s3 I would declare it all to protect myself financially.

DirectLine have been unbeatable for me for the last 8 years or so

After seeing their advert I tried the Norwich Union site that apparently tells you their competitions quotes, even if they are more expensive.

What a load of tosh. You get to choose from about 10 companies to compare against, most of which are relative unknowns anyway (pointless comparison). The ones I did try all came about about 50% cheaper than the NU price!!

I'm no Richard Branson, but I dont think that can be good for business

For a laugh, you could try www.comparethemeerkat.com
March 2011 - B8 Audi S4, Ibis White, S-Tronic, Leather / Alcantera Super Sports Seats, Heated Front Seats, Advanced Key, Tech Pack High, Electrically folding and auto dimming mirrors

Makes sense to petrol heads and buzz freaks. You should know, you have spunked enough on mods over the years!

Flux want Ł550ish without remap and Ł650ish with. One of the better quotes so far with the remap included.

Got 3 weeks to sort it so will make some calls this week based on what the guys on here have suggeste.

    cheers

    Bump.

Still getting wacky quotes, cheapest with REVO Stage 1 is Greenlight @Ł580.

No one else is even near except Adrian Flux @ Ł650 the rest of the goons and supposed `modified` car experts are upwards of Ł1000.

I only paid Ł390 last on a std car last year so I dont really want to be paying nearly half as much again for a measily 15% increase in power.

The guy at Greenlight was really switched on and knowledgeble about remaps. They are currently talking to aother forums and plan to speak to AS to see what member discounts can be arranged.

So, what are you S3 guys paying with declared mods ?

Some companies are very competetive for std cars but completely drop off if its modded.

    Cheers again

Yes I can understand. Depends if you want the remap for performance ahem!!! or for the security "FEATURE" to make your car alot more protected. It is a security device at the end of the day and sometimes you need to have some sort of reduced power for valet etc when yuor car is being cleaned don't you. I just wish they ( Didn't ) put the remap on don't you guys.

If you think any insurance company is going to believe that your living in cloud cuckoo land. People remap cars to gain performance.

Did think about just switching it off with Select Switch.

But because Ive had numerous quotes, many of them online, Im not sure how this information is `shared` if you know what I mean....

For example if I went back to stock, would the car flag up on quotation databases as a modded car?

I dont mind towing the line, but I dont like being ripped off neither.

Im 35 for fcuks sake! I havent paid this much insurance since my twentys.

    Robbing twats.

Every single quote I have had has gone up since last year by at least 20%.

Looks like Greenlight are the best of the bad bunch and I will have to bite the bullet.

Getting cover on a std car is easy.

Getting cover on a modded car isnt.

In reality, a remap is only giving a 15% increase over stock which makes the hike in premium totally unjustified IMO.

I guess if you make your car faster, they assume you'll drive it faster.

Occasionally, and conditions permitting, I may drive it 15% faster.

If you don't tell them you have a remap, get your cheap insurance, buy one of those revo controllers with the money saved and if you ever smash it up you can just flash it back to standard!

    Everyones happy

Did that last time, just forgot to mention it.

Foolishly came over `all moral` this time.
Last time I allow morals to feature in a commercial decision making process.

Let that be a warning to you all.

    cheers

Except the insurance company. What you suggest is insurance fraud. I thought Audi drivers were above that sort of thing. It may be difficult to change it back to standard from your hospital bet!

The revo controller (AKA select switch) does not flash it back to standard it just switches to a standard map.

The easiest way to tell if an s3 car has been revo remapped (without driving it/vagcom etc), is to plug in a select switch and see if you can put it into anti theft mode.
