But again you have missed my point, an S3 is NOT just a badge, not just a chipped, lowered A3. But you so obviously no idea what I am talking about.

I kinda agree with Co55ie on this one.
I don’t think enough has been done to make this model of S3 as special as the other one.
It looks very similar to an A3 sline 2.0T quattro and there do not seem to be enough benefits to justify the extra cost.
Where as the old S3 looked far better than A3 1.8T quattro.
I would also say the comparison of 4motion and R32 is not that similar to this situation.
R32 (mk4) looks so much better than the 4 motion, has better seats, larger engine and handles far better to.
I know an A3 would never be an S3 but I just don’t think this S3 ticks enough boxes to justify the extra cost. I don’t think there will be as many A3 2.0T Quattro drivers that will lust after the new S3 compared with the number of golf owners that will have wanted an R32.

There are models in the A3 range are just too close to the new S3, how many people bought an A3 thinking Audi wouldn't be introducing a new S3? It's taken them long enough, and with a 3.2 V6 in the A3 range it just seems weird, the whole line up.
You can spec up an A3 to look really good, (S-Lines, Votex kits, 18" wheels) and you can buy A3's that are pretty nippy(2.0T, 3.2s). All this before you even consider aftermarket options.
Then along comes the new S3 that goes a bit faster, sounds alot worse than the top A3 model, looks no better, drives no better and costs more.
marriedblonde I get where your coming from, but this new S3 is just not special enough. The original had body work that wouldnt fit the A3 without modification exactly as the M3 did in comparison to the 3 series coupe. This new S3 really is just an A3 with a badge, body kit and stretched out 2 litre engine. And to top it all of the only bits you can get to make it look different to a normal A3 costs 3 grand extra! See where your coming from though.

What it boils down to is Audi's marketing department. Had they not decided to follow BMW and their M-sport pack and offer this Audi S-Line pack add-on to A3 models, then the new S3 would be significantly different to a standard A3. Like it was with the 8L, although leather was an option on A3 8L's, but not recaro's.
So going of everyones dissapointment with the new S3, Audi may become a victim of their own marketing departments greed to offer more to everyone. The sad thing is, they didn't offer more to distinguish the new S3 from the rest of the line up.
Having owned an 8L A3 1.8T ('99-'02) and then moved to an 8L S3 ('02-present). I remember the desire the S3 created in me. The new one doesn't do that for me, and I can perfectly understand 8P 2.0T owners feeling the same. It just doesn't offer enough to make you want one. And thats because more "S" type bits have been offered on cars in range. The "S3" is a desireable badge, its just not what it was.

Everyone is kicking up a fuss about this but i remember when the S3/RS3 were still just rumour and heresay quite a few ppl either on here or tyresmoke said they would rather have the 2.0 litre rather than the heavy 3.2....
If you look at other hot versions of cars right across the price spectrum think how differnet they are from the standard run of the mill cars.

It mentions that there is supple suspension, a concern that was different from the tests in Germany that commented it was driven on silky smooth german roads and that the car did not look like it was supple enough.
Just what the **** is going on here? We get lack lustre reviews of the S3 and now a contraciction from a UK test drive (indcidentally not backed up by UK pictures).
I am still waiting for a week long test drive of and S4 but it looks like audi might not have kicked themselves in the teeth afterall...
I do wonder how the german test cars fared so badly if this report is anything to go by...
