Hi everyone,

I have an Audi A3 2.0 FSI 2004. (8P)

Had it since new.

About 5 months back the micro switches that control the temp on the Climate Control stopped working (one way), I can only make the car hotter and its stuck on 25... so not looking forward to the summer, particularly as the passenger side has now done the same!

So a couple of questions for you:

1. Is there anyway to reset the temperature without using the two switches on the front?

2. Has anyone had similar problems with theirs? I know the car is no spring chicken, but I'm struggling to believe I've treated mine particularly badly and it does seem strange that they would both go within 6 months of each other.

3. I took the unit out and found a code - 8P0 820 043 5PR. I checked around and although I've found similar units for sale used (at least from the front they look the same), the code is slightly different. Does anyone know if units with different codes are compatible or do I have to buy a unit with exactly the same code?

I checked with Audi, they want to charge me around £600. Thats more than 10% of what the car is probably worth!

Any help with this greatly appreciated.

you can get another heater unit try and get one out of a car pre 2007 as others will not fit, most should be drop in but if you do happen to get aa double din one (for a the double sided stereo) just change the casings over its a 5 min job

There are two letters missing from your code. 5PR is the colour code for black. It should be 8P0 820 043 ?? Is it single din or double din ? The last bit matters because they have different shaped front plates.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies guys.

Ok, so the last three letters are the colour and 5PR means black. Well, that makes sense as I have a black unit.

I guess the unit itself is double-din? It looks just like this...

AUDI A3 CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT 8P0820043H | eBay

It looks black, but maybe the photo is deceptive and 43H is dark blue?

They don't do a blue ! The number is split into 3 sections :- 8P0 820 043 after that there are two extra letters like AH or AG.

To my knowledge there isn't just an 'H'.

ok, so if it starts with 8P0 820 043 and its pre 2007 then expecation is that the unit will fit. The existing unit just pulled out, there were no clips or screws keeping it in so should be straight forward to replace and I can look forward to a cooler summer.

Having said that I would of thought black was the most common colour, so still a little suprised that the same code with 5PR on the end has not popped up that often. In the case of the eBay seller mentioned earlier, perhaps they have put inaccurate info, but would be surprised if this is the case, anyway I will get them to confirm.

You need to check with them to see if it's double din. Presumably you have Symphony radio or RNSE and the triangle switch etc. are below the radio ?

in the meantime, you might want to use your spare/second set of keys as I understood that the responder in the key allows the car to 'remember' each driver's temp setting. So if temp was set to 21 the last time you used the other set of keys, there's a good chance that it will return to that temp when you use those keys again. Not a real solution for your problem of course, but it might keep you cool until you get the unit sorted out...

Hi Qua3ttro,

You are correct. Thankfully the wifes were a few degree less on the driver side when the first switch went, however when we took the car to the workshop the audi mechanic kindly pumped it up a few degrees when checking the problem I had reported, which was nice of them. Here I was thinking it was a simple replacement of a broken micro switch not a full component replacement, how wrong I was. They don't make em like they use to!

ah that's too bad! You must be really fond that mechanic now, aren't you. I hope you get it sorted soon, although: 25C in the car might give you the impression the weather is nice, which is not a bad thing considering the weather we've had lately...

Hi, here is the dashboard (without climate control as its sitting in front of me!)

Very true - for example the MkI Escort Climate Control system which had such varied options as "Whatever temperature the outside air is", "Hot, but only after you've driven for 25 minutes and are nearly there anyway" and "Open the windows, see if that helps"

:p

Hope you get it sorted soon, though - 25C is nice when you've just got in the car on a cold day, but it's not nice for driving long distances.

Hi, there's no conclusion on HOW you solved the problem with the switches no longer adjusting the temperature. What was your fix? Thanks

Hi I need some help with my climate control Audi A3 8p 2005 TDI I have just upgraded my interior with leather seats that are heated so had to change the climate control unit and also got the new wiring loom all be fitted but I'm now facing a problem with the AC when I turn it on and have it blowing cold to the screen and floor it works fine but if I change the blower to the 2 centre ones it blows out very hot if I put it back to screen and floor it's cold again. I have checked it on vcds and there are no faults showing has anyone got any idea what's wrong
