Hi all,

I've been reading this forum all day today and done a lot of reading over at vwaudiforum too. The reason is because I almost bought an 2005 A3 2.0 TDI 140 Sport and then had a friend heavily advise me against them due to injector faults etc. I'd never heard about this so did some trawling through Google etc and found the megathreads on here and other forums regarding people with 'BLB' enginges and 2005 - 2008 140ps and especially the 170ps Piezo injector based engines I'm now a bit lost as to what I want to get.

I want an A3, 2004 or 2005 TDI and the idea of a late 2005 with the facelift is really appealing to me. The problem is that I don't want one of the 105ps 1.9L engines, it's just too slow for my needs. So I'm hoping I've understood everything and I was settled on a 2004 2.0L 140ps A3 that's a non BLB (I'd check the sticker next to the spare wheel for this right?) but then I read;

" Avoid the later piezo injector engines and avoid the 2.0 PD at all costs because of the likelihood of oil pump drive failure - especially in N-S installations."

... over at honestjohn and now stuck again, is this reference to the BLB and as long as I avoid that and get pre 2005 I *should* avoid these two major faults?

Cheers

I bought a 2005 A3 2.0 tdi and didn't know about any of these issues. I'd do the same thing again. TBH you can read too much into stuff.

My 2006 MY ('05 reg) 2.0 TDI Sportback has the 140 BKD engine. As far as I know all the 140's are BKD engines.

The biggest problems with this engine are known to be a porous cylinder head (in early pre 2005 engines mainly ) and a turbo that is possibly a bit on the weak side when driving the car hard, regularly. This turbo together with the clutch do not stand up well to re-mapping and uprating the engine.

Oil pump failure is relatively rare and if the car is regularly serviced by either Audi or a VAG specialist then should be ok.

There are millions of BKD engined cars (VW Golf Mk V etc.) that perform perfectly well without problems

A 2004 car is more likely to have an early BKD engine so may have cylinder head problems. An indicator is heavy loss of coolant and white smoke from exhaust.

Only buy with a full Audi service history and if the car has exceeded 70,000 miles make sure it's had a cambelt change.
