    Pushing back rear caliper pistons?

    Anything special that I need to do for this?

    I had a quick go during the weekend past but I couldn't push back the piston at all using a G clamp. Didn't have time to fanny about with opening the bleed nipple etc.

    I've read elsewhere that because its the back and its also the E-Brake then it could be threaded?

    Just trying to save some pennies!

    G clamp !!!!!!!!! Jeeez. get the pison square and it should move back under the load of its own seal so slacken the bleed and try again. If not pump it a fraction to square it up then push back with your thumbs.

    Question, engine on or off?

    Cause there is absolutely no chance that the above will happen if the engine is off!

    It was simple enough to do with my Corsa, though I don't know why is is so different?

    The rear pads need rotated in using a tool, there was a thread about it a few weeks back IIRC.

    The electronic brake system need the motors retracted using VCDS & then then pistons are pushed in. This system isnt fitted to the A3 - unless NHN has managed the retrofit & kept quiet LOL

    Halfords | Laser Left Brake Caliper Rewind Tool This is the tool you need but id get it from somewhere else as it will be a lot cheaper.

    Reading the comments, some may need a right hand one too?

    or does the A3 only require a left hand tool?

    It works by rotating the piston as well as pushing it in. Not sure about what direction you need though but on my 8l a3 it was the one in the link. If you went to a motor factors they should be able to tell you which one you need. As well as the adaptor.

    i screwed both mine clockwise with the wind in tool just take the cap off the brake fluid reservoir.
    2002 1.9 tdi 130ish brake a4. full reiger body kit, 19 inch rs6 avant rims, eibach springs, home made grill, full leather interior, centre arm rest, quad powerflow exausts, a few engine mods, chrome door mirrors, aero wipers, s line door blades.

    You can damage the threads by trying to use a G-clamp, so be very careful. -If you've bogged the threads up, you MIGHT have to replace the caliper... depending on how much force you used.

    I've seen a rear caliper on a MkIV buggered up using exactly that method... -it had to be replaced.
